  1. སྡིག་པ།

Biblical: sin སྡིག་པ། is an offense against God and his perfect moral law: ངན་པ་ཡིན་པ་ངས་བྱས་ཏེ། ཁྱེད་གཅིག་པོར་ངས་སྡིག་པ་བྱས། against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil (Ps. 51:4). From a Biblical standpoint, all sin is ultimately directed at God and is an offense to his holiness. It is thus more than just selfishness བདག་འཛིན་པ། or a negative act ལས་ངན། committed in a moral vacuum. Sin is an act that brings God's wrath དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་ཁྲོ། upon sinners, and leads to spiritual death: སྡིག་པའི་འབྲས་བུ་ནི་འཆི་བ་ཡིན། the wages [lit. fruit, result] of sin is death (Rom. 6:23). It can be forgiven སྡིག་སེལ་བ། through faith in Christ.

Buddhist: སྡིག་པ། is what is non-virtuous or evil (TDC 1462); in the Tibetan popular mind the term is strongly associated with the killing of animals. The classic list of sins is the so-called ten non-virtues or སྡིག་པ་མི་དགེ་བ་བཅུ། one list of which includes: སྲོག་གཅོད་པ། killing; མ་བྱིན་པར་ལེན་པ། theft; ལོག་གཡེམ། sexual misconduct; བརྫུན། lying; ཁྲ་མ། slander; ཚིག་རྩུབ། harsh speech; ངག་འཁྱལ། gossip; བརྣབ་སེམས། covetousness; གནོད་སེམས། intent to harm others; and ལོག་ལྟ། wrong [i.e. non-Bst.] views. In Bsm. sin is a negative or unskillful action which is punished by karma ལས། (see fruit) and is thus a totally individual concern: སྡིག་རང་བསགས་རང་ཁུར། each one must carry the burden of his own sin (TQP 123), hence the Bst. claim is that it is not necessary to feel guilty for sin, as no supernatural authority or being has been offended by it, and there is no judge to punish it (MTB 63). Eventual punishment for sin through the action of karma ལས་རྒྱུ་འབྲས། is, however, inevitable and inescapable: གང་དུ་སྡིག་པའི་ལས་ཀྱིས་མི་ཚུགས་པའི། ས་ཕྱོགས་དེ་ནི་ཡོད་པ་མ་ཡིན་ཏེ། བར་སྣང་ལ་མེད་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་དབུས་སུ་མེད། རི་བོའི་སུལ་དང་བྲག་གི་ཁོངས་སུ་མེད། where can we go where our sins will not harm us? No place on earth - not in the heavens, not in the middle of the sea, not in the rocky clefts of mountains (DMP 66; cf. Ps. 103:12). In most Bst. schools the possibility of grace is precluded: ཐུབ་རྣམས་སྡིག་པ་ཆུ་ཡིས་མི་འཁྲུ་ཞིང་། འགྲོ་བའི་སྡུག་བསྔུལ་ཕྱག་གིས་མི་སེལ་ལ། ཉིད་ཀྱི་རྟོགས་པ་གཞན་ལ་འཕོ་མིན་ཏེ། ཆོས་ཉིད་བདེན་པ་བསྟན་པས་གྲོལ་བར་འགྱུར། ཞེས་གསུངས་ཡོད་པ་རེད། the Buddhas do not wash away sin with water, and they do not remove by hand the miseries of living creatures. They do not transfer their own understanding to others. They deliver by teaching this very Dharma (TRC 77); i.e. སྡིག་པ་སྤོང་བའི་ལམ་ནི། སྐྱབས་དངོས་ཆོས་དཀོན་མཆོག་ཡིན། the Buddha's teachings are the actual way of abandoning sin (REF 115). Sin accounts for rebirth in the lower realms, hence the saying: ལས་ངན་པའི་སྡིག་པ་མ་བསགས་ན། སྐྲག་དགོས་པའི་གཤིན་རྗེ་ཆོས་རྒྱལ་མེད། if one does not accumulate sins, one need not fear the lord of death (TDC 1462). The many vivid tales of the sufferings of the hell realms (JPG 181-4) account for the proverbial advice: སྡིག་པ་རྣམས་ནི་ཡོངས་སུ་སྤོངས། completely abandon sins (DMP 64) and སྡིག་པ་སྤོང་བ་དང་། དགེ་བ་སྒྲུབ་པ། abandon vice and accomplish virtue or good works (TRC 227).

Proverbs: 1) ཞེ་སྡང་ལྟ་བུའི་སྡིག་པ་མེད། there is no evil [deed] like hatred (TRC 347); 2) ཤིན་ཏུ་བཟོད་དཀའི་ངན་སོང་སྡུག་བསྔལ་རྣམས། སྡིག་པའི་ལས་ཀྱི་འབྲས་བུར་ཐུབ་པས་གསུངས། the Buddhas teach that terrible sufferings are the fruit of sinful deeds (GSL 10).

Cognates: 1) མཚམས་མེད་མ་ཡིན་པའི་སྡིག་པ། [lit. sin without limits] sin that leads to death; deadly, capital sin: སུ་ཞིག་གིས་སྤུན་ཞིག་མཚམས་མེད་མ་ཡིན་པའི་སྡིག་པ་བྱེད་པར་མཐོང་ན། if anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death (1 Jn. 5:16). Examples of such sins in Bsm. are the མཚམས་མེད་ལྔ། or five limitless actions: killing one's father, mother, a Bst. saint, a Buddha, or causing divisions in the monk body (TRI 222); committing any of these sins is believed to lead to rebirth in the མནར་མེད། hottest hell; 2) སྡིག་པ། a scorpion (Rev. 9:3); 3) སྡིག་པ་འདག་པ། to get rid of sin by doing good things (AMD).

  3. ཉེས་པ།

Biblical: 1) sin: གལ་ཏེ་ངེད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་བྱས་པའི་ཉེས་པ་མཐོལ་བཤགས་འབུལ་ན། if we confess our sins (1 Jn. 1:9), ཉེས་པ་གཞན་མ་མིས་བྱེད་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་རང་གི་ལུས་དང་བྲལ་བ་ཡིན། all other sins a man commits are outside his body (1 Cor. 6:18 SV); 2) guilt: ཉེས་པ་མ་བརྟག་པ། without being found guilty (Acts 22:25), ཡེ་རུ་ཤ་ལེམ་པ་གཞན་ལས་ཉེས་ཅན། more guilty than the others living in Jerusalem (Lk. 13:4).

Buddhist: 1) fault or defect: སྨན་པས་མ་ཉེས་སྨན་གྱིས་མ་ཉེས་ཏེ། ནད་པ་དེ་ཉིད་ཀྱིས་ནི་ཉེས་པ་ཡིན། it is not the fault of the doctor or the medicine, but that of the patient himself (TRC 77), ཉེས་པ་ལྔ། five faults in the technique of meditation (TRC 201), ཉེས་པ་མི་སྨྲ་རྒྱལ་སྲས་ལག་ལེན་ཡིན། not to speak of faults is the practice of the sons of the Buddha (GSL 26); 2) moral faults in Bsm: སྲོག་བཅད་པའི་ཉེས་པ། the sin of killing [a goat] (DPD), ཉེས་པ་གསུམ། are the three cardinal sins of Bsm. འདོད་ཆགས་དང་། ཞེ་སྡང་དང་། གཏི་མུག desire, hatred, and ignorance (SGC 280); 3) breaking of rules or vows: ཉེས་བྱས་བཞི་བཅུའི་ཞེ་དྲུག the forty six faults (breaking of one's vows) (TRI 95). 4. ཉེས་པ་བྱེད།

    p. བྱས། f. བྱ། imp. བྱོས། [lit. fault + do]

Biblical: to sin: མི་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱིས་ཉེས་པ་བྱས་པས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་སྙན་གྲགས་དང་འབྲལ་བའོ། all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23 SV).
