  1. སེམས།

    [hon. ཐུགས། Skt. chitta]

    Biblical: 1) the human mind or heart: སྙིང་​སེམས་​གཅིག་​ཏུ་​གྱུར། one in heart and mind (Acts 4:32), མི་​རེ་​རེས་​རང་​གི་​སེམས་​ནང་​། each in his own mind (Rom. 14:5), ངའི་​སེམས་​མ་​བདེ་​བ། I had no peace of mind (2 Cor. 2:13), འཇིག་​རྟེན་​འདིའི་​ལྷས་​སེམས་​ལྡོངས་​སུ་​བཅུག་​པ་​ཡིན། the god of this age has blinded their minds (2 Cor. 4:4); 2) the divine mind: གཙོ་​བོའི་​ཐུགས་​སུས་​བརྟགས། who has known the mind of the Lord (Rom. 11:34), ང་​ཚོར་​མ་​ཤི་​ཀའི་​ཐུགས་​ཡོད། we have the mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:16); 3) mind, soul, or spirit: སེམས་​སྒྱུར་​མ་​བཏུབ་​པས་​མ་​ཐོབ་​པ། he could bring about no change of mind (Heb.12:17), ལུས་​སྲོག་​སེམས་​གསུམ། body, spirit, and soul (1 Thes. 5:23), ངའི་​སེམས་​ཁྱེད་​ཚོའི་​རྩར་​ཡོད། I am with you in spirit (1 Cor. 5:3), རང་​གི་​སྙིང་​ཧྲིལ་​པོ་​དང་​། སེམས་​ཧྲིལ་​པོ་​དང་​། ཡིད་​ཧྲིལ་​པོ་​ནས། with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (Mt. 22:37).

    Buddhist: The terms བློ། ཡིད། སེམས། are said to be indistinguishable in common speech (KTM, AMD) and to denote the mind or the (non-physical) heart (AMD). Mind is the agent of awareness and consciousness. In Bst. psychology the mind is not localized to any particular bodily organ (BTT 42) and may include what in English are called the senses (TRI 283). 1) the mind, thought life: སེམས་​པའི་​ལས། [lit. mind + work] mental actions; སེམས་​ལ་​སྐྱོན་​ཡོད་​མེད་​ཀྱི་​བརྟག་​དཔྱད། a test of whether one's mind has any defects (TRC 5), སེམས་​རང་​གི་​དམིགས་​པ་​ལ་​གནས། the mind remains on its object of concentration (TRC 186), སེམས་​ལ་​མུན་​པ་​བབས་​པ་​ལྟ་​བུའི་​རྨུགས་​པ། to have torpor fall like darkness on the mind (TRC 186); 2) the attitudes or intentions which arise in the mind; which may be: a) wholesome: བྱང་​ཆུབ་​སེམས། the mind of enlightenment or the wish that all living creatures may be freed from misery (CNG 149), བརྩེ་​སེམས། love; b) unwholesome: གནོད་​སེམས། the wish to harm others, འགྲན་​སེམས། jealousy or competitiveness (DLP 13); c) neutral: སེམས་​པ། intention (KBT 13), anxiety: སེམས་​ཀྱི་​སྡུག་​བསྔལ། mental anguish (TRC 272); 3) the agent which operates in rational thoughts, e.g.: concentration: སེམས་​རྩེ་​གཅིག་​པ་​ཉིད། single-pointed mind; one of the four concentrations (KBT 104); will: སེམས་​པ། intention, one of the 51 psychic factors (KBT 13); discipline: སེམས་​འདུལ་​ཐབས། mental training (DLP 8); concern: སེམས་​ཁུར་​ཆེན་​པོ། a great concern (DLP 8), འཛམ་​གླིང་​ཞི་​བདེའི་​དོན་​ལ་​སེམས་​ཁུར་​ལྡན་​པའི་​ཆོས་​པ་​ཚོ། religious practitioners who are concerned with world peace (DLP 21); worry: ཕ་​མ་​གཉིས་​དང་​སྤུན་​ཚང་​མས་​སེམས་​ཁྲལ་​མང་​པོ་​བྱས་​སོ། my family was very worried about me (DPD); forming opinions: ཁོ་​ཚོའི་​སེམས་​ལ། in their opinion, thinking that something is true (SLR 10); 4) the seat of emotions: a) fear: སེམས་​ལ་​འཇིགས་​དངངས་​སྐྱེ་​བ། frightening (DLP 7); b) tenderness, love (DLP 14), གཞན་​ཕན་​སེམས། altruism (DLP 14), བྱམས་​པའི་​སེམས། kindness (GSL 14); c) comfort: སེམས་​གསོ་​བ། to comfort, encourage (SGN 23); d) gladness: སེམས་​དགའ་​བ། to be glad (DPD); e) happiness སེམས་​སྐྱིད། happiness (KPU 5); f) peace: ནང་​སེམས་​ཀྱི་​བདེ་​བ། inner peace (DLP 8); g) sensitivity: སྐྱེ་​བོ་​སེམས་​བག་​སྲབ་​པ། a sensitive person (DLP 1), h) greed: བརྣབ་​སེམས། covetousness; i) sympathy: གདུང་​སེམས། sympathy (DLP 11); j) devotion: ཆོས་​སེམས། devout (DPD); k) sincerity: གཡོ་​སྒྱུ་​མེད་​པའི་​སེམས། (HTE 170).

    Proverbs: 1) སེམས་​ནི་​གཡོ་​ཞིང་​འཁྱུག་​པ་​དང་​། བསྲུང་​བར་​དཀའ་​ཞིང་​ཞི་​དཀའ། the mind is unstable and cunning, hard to tame or pacify; 2) ཆུ་​ཡི་​ཁྱིམ་​དུ་​སྐྱེས་​པའི་​ཉ། ཐང་​ལ་​འཕང་​བ་​ཇི་​བཞིན་​དུ། བདུད་​ཀྱི་​ཡུལ་​ས་​བསྐྱུར་​བ་​ལ། སེམས་​འདི་​ཡོངས་​སུ་​འདར་​བར་​འགྱུར། as the sea-born fish [trembles when] thrown onto the land, so the mind, cast into the devil's realm, thrashes about (DMP 18).

  2. བློ།

    Biblical: mind, understanding: བློ་​ལས་​འདས་​པའི་​དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​ཞི་​བདེ། the peace of God, which passes understanding (Phil. 4:7), བློ་​སྙིང་​གཅིག་​ཏུ། united in mind and thought (1 Cor. 1:10), རང་​གི་​བློ་​གསར་​དུ་​བསྒྱུར་​བས་​གཤིས་​ཀྱང་​སྒྱུར་​ཞིག be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Rom. 12:2).

    Buddhist: 1) mental faculty, mind: བློ་​སྦྱོང་​། mental training, study (TRI 188); བློ་​རྒྱ་​ཆེ་​ཆུང་​དང་​། བསམ་​པའི་​ཁུར་​ཆེ་​ཆུང་​གི་​སྒོ་​ནས་​གཞག་​གི་​རེད། he is categorized according to the stature of his mind or the small or great burden of his thought (TRC 216), བློའི་​ཟུར་​ཅིག་​ནས། from a corner of the mind (TRC 200), བློ་​ཤུགས་​ཆེན་​པོ། [lit. strong mind] great determination (TRC 256); 2) perception or awareness: བློ་​རིག་​བདུན། the seven awarenesses (CNG 90), བློ་​རིག་​བཞི། the four types of awareness (TRI 189); 3) wisdom [Skt. buddhi]: བློ་​གྲོས། intelligence or wisdom, ལེགས་​པའི་​བློ་​གྲོས། excellent wisdom, one of the 10 boddhisattva grounds (KBT 66).

  3. ཡིད།

    Biblical: mind, heart: ཡིད་​གསར་​པར་​གྱུར་​ཅིག made new in the attitude of your minds (Eph. 4:23), དེ་​ཚོའི་​ཡིད་​ནང་​ངའི་​བཀའ་​ཁྲིམས། I will [put] my laws in their minds (Heb. 8:10) or hearts (Heb. 10:16), རང་​གི་​སྙིང་​ཧྲིལ་​པོ་​དང་​། སེམས་​ཧྲིལ་​པོ་​དང་​། ཡིད་​ཧྲིལ་​པོ་​ནས། with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (Mt. 22:37).

    Buddhist: the seat of consciousness and perception, which in Bst. metaphysics extends to the whole world; hence: ཆོས་​རྣམས་​ཡིད་​ཀྱི་​རང་​བཞིན་​ཏེ། all things have the nature of mind (DMP 2). Specifically, ཡིད། is: 1) the seat of emotions: ཡིད་​འོང་​བྱམས་​པ། affectionate love (TRC 321), ཡིད་​དུ་​འོང་​བ། attractive, pleasant (TRC 260), ཡིད་​ལ་​འབབ་​པ། pleasing (SLR 15); 2) the rational mind: ཡིད་​ཀྱི་​སྐྱབས་​འགྲོ། taking refuge mentally (TRC 73), ལུས་​ངག་​ཡིད་​གསུམ། body, speech, and mind (TRC 244), ཡིད་​བྱེད། attention, ཡིད་​ཆེས། faith; 3) consciousness: ཡུལ་​ཤེས་​པའི་​ཆ་​ནས་​བཞག་​པའི་​རྣམ་​ཤེས་​ཏེ། སེམས་​རྣམས་​སོ། the consciousness on the basis of which objects are known; thoughts (TDC 2570).

  4. བསམ་​པ།

    [hon. ཐུགས་​བསམ།]

    Biblical: 1) mind: ཁྱེད་​ཚོའི་​སྙིང་​དང་​བསམ་​པ་​རྣམས། your hearts and minds (Phil. 4:7); 2) an attitude of mind: ཐུགས་​ཉིད་​ཀྱི་​བསམ་​པས་​ཚེ་​མཐའ་​མེད་​པ་​དང་​ཞི་​བདེ། the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace (Rom. 8:6), འཇིག་​རྟེན་​པའི་​བསམ་​པས་​དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​བཀའ་​ཁྲིམས་​ལ་​མི་​ཉན། the worldly mind does not obey God's law (Rom. 8:7); 3) change one's mind: བསམ་​པ་​བསྒྱུར་​ཏེ་​ཁོང་​ནི་​ལྷ་​ཞིག་​གོ་​ཟེར་​རོ། they changed their minds and said he was a god (Acts 28:6); 4) thought: ཡེ་​ཤུས་​དེ་​རྣམས་​གྱི་​བསམ་​པ་​མཁྱེན་​ནས། Jesus knew their thoughts (Mt. 9:4); 5) will: ལུང་​བསྟན་​གང་​ཡང་​མིའི་​བསམ་​པ་​ལས་​མ་​བྱུང་​། prophecy never had its origin in the will of man (2 Pet. 1:20,21).

    Buddhist: 1) attitude: སྙིང་​ཐག་​པ་​ནས་​རེ་​ལྟོས་​འཆའ་​བའི་​བསམ་​པ། the attitude which relies on them from the heart (TRC 73), བསམ་​པ་​དེ་​འདྲས་​ཤིག་​དང་​ལྡན་​པ། with this kind of attitude (TRC 73), གྲོགས་​པོའི་​བསམ་​པ། a friendly attitude (TRC 167); 2) reflection, consideration: བསམ་​པ་​ཟེར་​བ་​དེ་​སངས་​རྒྱས་​ཀྱི་​བཀའ་​ལ་​སོགས་​པ་​ཐོས་​ནས་​དེའི་​དོན་​ལ་​ཚུལ་​བཞིན་​དུ་​བརྟག་​དཔྱད་​ལེགས་​པར་​བྱས་​པའི་​སྒོ་​ནས་​ངེས་​ཤེས་​རྙེད་​པར་​བྱེད་​པའི་​བསམ་​པ་​ཞིག་​ལ་​ཟེར་​གྱི་​ཡོད་​པ་​རེད། reflection is the faculty which examines well the teaching of the scriptures and their commentaries and finds valid knowledge (TRC 184), བསམ་​པས་​བརྟག་​དཔྱད་​ཡག་​པོ་​བྱས། having done a good examination by way of reflection (TRC 185), བསམ་​པ་​དང་​། སྒོམ་​པ། reflection and meditation (TRC 242); 3) rational thought, thinking: བསམ་​པའི་​སྒོ་​ནས་​སྐྱེས་​བུ་​ཆུང་​ངུའི་​མཆོག་​དེ་​ལས་​ཀྱང་​ལྷག་​པ་​རེད། the so-called middle individual is superior also to the best small individual from the point of view of his thinking (TRC 217), སྙིང་​རྗེའི་​བསམ་​པ། the thought of compassion (TRC 218), ཕྱི་​མ་​ཕན་​ཆད་​ལ་​བདེ་​བའི་​བསམ་​པ། a thought of happiness for the future (TRC 227), ངོས་​ཀྱི་​བསམ་​པར། in my opinion (DLP 8); 4) moral action: སེམས་​པའི་​ལས་​དང་​། བསམ་​པའི་​ལས། mental actions and deliberative actions (TRC 287); བསམ་​པའི་​ལས་​ཟེར་​བ་​ནི། སེམས་​པ་​དེས་​ཀུན་​ནས་​བསླངས་​པའི་​ལུས་​ངག་​གི་​བྱ་​བ་​དགེ་​མི་​དགེ་​ལུང་​མ་​བསྟན་​གསུམ་​པོ་​དེ་​ལ་​ཟེར་​གྱི་​ཡོད་​པ་​རེད། deliberative action signifies the three, virtuous, non-virtuous, and indeterminate acts of body and speech (TRC 287), མི་​རྣམས་​ཀྱིས་​འདོད་​རྔམས་​དང་​། ཕྲག་​དོག་​གིས་​ཀུན་​ནས་​བསླངས་​པའི་​བསམ་​པ་​ཤུགས་​ཆེར་​འཁྱེར་​བ་​ཡིན་​ན། when people are motivated mainly by thoughts of greed and jealousy (DLP 11), སྙིང་​རྗེའི་​བསམ་​པ། a sense of compassion (DLP 16), བསམ་​པ་​ལ་​ཡང་​ནང་​གསེས་​ཀྱིས་​ཉོན་​མོངས་​པ་​དང་​། ཀུན་​སློང་​། འདུ་​ཤེས་​བཅས་​གསུམ་​ཡོད་​པ་​རེད། within the thought there are the three: the passion, the motivation, and the singling out (TRC 243).

"thick"] (2 Cor. 3:14); 3) རང་​གི་​ལས་​ལ་​དོན་​གཉེར། "mind your own business": རང་​གི་​ལས་​ལ་​དོན་​གཉེར། mind your own business (1 Thes. 4:11,12); 4) དགོངས་​པ། [hon. ཐུགས་​དགོངས།] desire, intention, or will, especially the will of God: གཙོ་​བོའི་​ཐུགས་​དགོངས་​སུ་​ཡིས་​ཤེས། who has known the mind of the Lord (1 Cor. 2:16), ཉིད་​ཀྱི་​ཐུགས་​དགོངས་​མི་​འགྱུར། [the Lord] will not change his mind (Heb. 7:21), ཐུགས་​ཉིད་​ཀྱི་​དགོངས་​པ་​མཁྱེན་​ནོ། knows the mind of the Spirit (Rom. 8:27); 5) ཐག་​བཅད། to make up one's mind; decide, resolve: སླར་​ཁྱེད་​ཚོ་​སྐྱོ་​བའི་​མཇལ་​ཕྲད་​ངས་​མི་​བྱེད་​པར་​ཐག་​བཅད་​པ་​ཡིན། I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you (2 Cor. 2:1); 6) སྨྱོ། to be "out of one's mind", insane: ཁྱོད་​སྨྱོའོ། you're out of your mind (Acts 12:15), ཁོང་​སྨྱོའོ་​ཟེར། they said, "He is out of his mind" (Mk. 3:21).
