heart

  1. སྙིང་​།

    Biblical: 1) the physical heart: རང་​གི་​སྙིང་​ལ་​འཁུར་​དགོས། he must carry it over his heart (Ex. 28:30); 2) the site of inner thoughts, feelings, and desires: སྙིང་​གི་​བསམ་​པ་​དང་​འདོད་​པ་​རྣམས་​མཁྱེན་​ནོ། [the Word of God] knows the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Heb. 4:12), བསམ་​ངན་​དང་​། མི་​གསོད་​པ་​དང་​། ལོག་​གཡེམ་​དང་​། འདོད་​ལོག་​དང་​། རྐུ་​བ་​དང་​། རྫུན་​གྱི་​དཔང་​པོ་​དང་​། སྐུར་​འདེབས་​ནི་​སྙིང་​གི་​ནང་​ནས་​འོང་​ངོ་​། from out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander (Mt. 15:19), དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གིས་​ཁྱེད་​ཀྱི་​སྙིང་​མཁྱེན་​པས། God knows your hearts (Lk. 16:15), བསམ་​བློ་​གཏོང་​གིན་​སྙིང་​ལ་​བཞག་​གོ [Mary] pondered them in her heart (Lk. 2:19). The heart is the center of spiritual activity in the life of man: གཙོ་​བོས་​དེའི་​སྙིང་​ཕྱེས། the Lord opened her heart (Acts 16:14), ཉིད་​ཀྱི་​སྲས་​ཀྱི་​ཐུགས་​ཉིད་​ཁྱེད་​ཚོའི་​སྙིང་​དུ་​སྩལ་​ཏེ། [God] sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts (Gal. 4:6), ཁྱོད་​ཀྱི་​སྙིང་​བདུད་​ཀྱིས་​ཁེངས་​པ་​དེ་​ཅི་​ཡིན། how is it that Satan has so filled your heart (Acts 5:3), ཁྱོད་​ཀྱི་​སྙིང་​དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​དྲུང་​དུ་​དྲང་​པོ་​མ་​ཡིན། your heart is not right before God (Acts 8:21), དེ་​ཚོའི་​དད་​པའི་​རྐྱེན་​གྱིས་​སྙིང་​དག་​པར་​མཛད་​དེ། he purified their hearts by faith (Acts 15:9), དད་​མེད་​ཀྱི་​སྙིང་​ངན་​པ། a sinful, unbelieving heart (Heb. 3:12), སྙིང་​ནས་​དད་​པ་​བྱེད་​ན། if you believe in your heart (Rom. 10:9). In Biblical psychology the heart is also the seat of emotions: 1) sincerity: སྙིང་​ནས་​བཟོད་​པར་​མི་​བྱེད་​ན། unless you forgive from your heart (Mt. 18:35), རང་​གི་​སྙིང་​ཧྲིལ་​པོ་​དང་​། སེམས་​ཧྲིལ་​པོ་​དང་​། ཡིད་​ཧྲིལ་​པོ། with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (Mt. 22:37), སྙིང་​ནས་​དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​ཐུགས་​དགོངས་​བཞིན་​དུ་​གཡོག་​བྱོས་​ཤིག doing the will of God from your heart (Eph. 6:6), ང་​ཚོའི་​བརྩེ་​བའི་​སྙིང་​འབྱེད་​དོ། we opened wide our hearts to you (2 Cor. 6:11); 2) ardor: ང་​ཚོའི་​སྙིང་​མ་​དྲོས་​སམ། were not our hearts burning (Lk. 24:32); 3) repentance: དེ་​ཐོས་​ནས་​དེ་​རྣམས་​ཀྱི་​སྙིང་​ལ་​ཟུག་​སྟེ། they were cut to the heart (Acts 2:37); 4) sadness: ངའི་​སྙིང་​གས་​པར་​བྱེད་​པ་​དེ་​ཅི་​ཡིན། why are you breaking my heart (Acts 21:13); 5) obstinacy: ཡ་​ཧོ་​ཝས་​ཕར་​ཨོ་​ཡི་​སྙིང་​སྲ་​བར་​མཛད་​དོ། the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart (Ex. 9:12), ཁྱེད་​ཚོའི་​སྙིང་​གྱོང་​པོ་​ཡིན་​པས། because your hearts were hard (Mt. 19:8), སྙིང་​མཁྲེགས་​པོ། stubborn hearts (Mk. 3:5); 6) desire: སྙིང་​ནས་​འདོད་​པས། heart's desire (Rom. 10:1); 7) discouragement: ང་​ཚོས་​སྙིང་​ཆུང་​མི་​བྱེད་​པར། we do not lose heart (2 Cor. 4:16); 8) fear: སྐྲག་​ནས་​སྙིང་​རྩ་​འདར། to shake in the heart from fear (KTM).

    Buddhist: The heart is the seat of moral action in Bsm; hence a "good heart" is one which has beneficial intentions toward others (BTT 4). Moral actions predicated of the heart include: 1) sincerity: སྙིང་​ནས་​གསོད་​པར་​འདོད་​པ། a heartfelt desire to kill (TRC 243), སྙིང་​ཐག་​པ་​ནས། sincerely, from the heart (TRC 331), སྙིང་​གཏམ། heartfelt advice (KPU 10), སྙིང་​གི་​སྒམ། the innermost part of one's heart (KPU 32), སྙིང་​གི་​དཀྱིལ་​ལ། in the center of one's heart (KPU 35); 2) affection, friendship, or love: དགྲ་​དེ་​ལ་​རང་​གི་​སྙིང་​དུ་​གཅེས་​པའི་​ཡིད་​འོང་​བྱམས་​པ། a love which cherishes one's enemy from the heart (TRC 320), སྙིང་​གྲོགས། a good friend (TRC 228), བྱམས་​སྙིང་​ལྡན། compassionate (DLP 3), སྙིང་​གི་​བུ་​ཚོ་​སྙིང་​ནས་​རྣ་​བ་​ཉོན། my spiritual sons, listen with your hearts (KPU 17), ཨ་​མའི་​སྙིང་​། a mother's heart (KPU 29), སྙིང་​རྗེ། compassion; 3) courage: སྙིང་​སྟོབས། courage, strength, determination (TCR 1); 4) the heart represents the pith or essence of a topic: ཤེས་​རབ་​ཀྱི་​ཕ་​རོལ་​ཏུ་​ཕྱིན་​པའི་​སྙིང་​པོ། The Heart of Going to the Far Side of Wisdom (Tibetan title of the Heart Sutra); སྙིང་​པོའི་​ལྷ་​ཆོས། the essence of the sublime dharma (religion) (HTE 172), སྙིང་​པོ་​མེད་​པ། without meaning or essence (HTE 202).

  2. སེམས།

    [hon. ཐུགས།]

    Biblical: mind, heart, soul: ངའི་​སེམས་​འཁྲུགས་​སོ། my heart is troubled (Jn. 12:27), ང་​སེམས་​དགའ། my heart is glad (Acts 2:26), ཁྱེད་​ཚོའི་​སེམས་​གསོ་​བ། to encourage your hearts (Col. 4:8), སེམས་​མ་​འཕམ། don't lose heart (Heb. 12:5), སེམས་​ལྷོད་​དེར་​སྡོད་​ཅིག །ཁྱོད་​ཀྱི་​སྡིག་​པ་​སེལ་​བ་​ཡིན། take heart; your sins are forgiven (Mt. 9:2), འགྱོད་​པ་​མི་​སྐྱེད་​བའི་​སེམས། an unrepentant heart (Rom. 2:5 SV), ཁྱེད་​ཅག་​ལ་​གདུང་​སེམས་​ཆེན་​པོ་​སྐྱེས་​སོ། their hearts will go out to you (2 Cor. 9:14 SV), སེམས་​དྲང་​པོར་​བྱོས་​ཤིག work at it with all your heart (Col. 3:23 SV).

    Buddhist: see mind. Though the primary meaning of སེམས། is mind, or consciousness, some compounds of སེམས། are used to express mental or emotional states which in English are predicated of the heart: 1) སེམས་​སྒྱུར་​བ། to change one's heart as in coming to believe in a new religion (AMD); 2) སེམས་​དཀྲུག་​པ། a troubled or confused heart; one that is not at peace (AMD); 3) སེམས་​བརླགས། changed in heart to a bad person (AMD); 4) སེམས་​བཟང་​། good or kind heart; 5) སེམས་​ཧ་​ཅང་​དགའ་​ནས། from a happy heart (KTM).

  3. བློ།

    Biblical: mind, heart: བློ་​དྲེད་​པོ། slow of heart (Lk. 24:25), ད་​དུང་​ཁྱོད་​ཚོའི་​བློ་​སྒྲིབ་​བམ། are your hearts still hardened (Mk. 8:17), བློ་​མུན་​པ་​རུ་​གྱུར་​པས། their hearts were darkened (Rom. 1:21), བློ་​དྲང་​པོས་​ཁ་​ལ་​ཉོན་​ཅིག obey with sincerity of heart (Eph. 6:5), བློ་​མི་​བདེ་​བ། an anguished heart (2 Cor. 2:4), བློ་​གྲོས་​གི་​མིག the eyes of your heart (Eph. 1:18 SV).

  4. ཡིད།

    Biblical: mind, heart: ཡིད་​ལ་​བདེང་​གནང་​ནས། encourage your hearts (2 Thes. 2:17), ཡིད་​ཀྱི་​ནང་​དུ་​མི་​འགྲོ་​བས། it doesn't go into his heart (Mk. 7:19), ཡིད་​ཀྱི་​ནང་​ནས་​འདོད་​ལོག from out of the heart [come] evil desires (Mk. 7:21), ཁོང་​གིས་​བཀའ་​བཀྱོན་​མཛད་​ན་​ཡིད་​མ་​འཕམ། do not lose heart when he rebukes you (Heb. 12:5 SV), ཐོས་​པ་​རྣམས་​དང་​། དེའི་​ནང་​ལ་​བྲིས་​པའི་​བྱ་​བ་​རྣམས་​ཡིད་​ལ་​འཆང་​བ་​རྣམས་​བདེའོ། blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written (Rev. 1:3 SV).
