Biblical: 1) God's unmerited favor or kindness. While mercy implies "holding back from punishing someone when punishment is deserved", grace means "showing (positive) kindness or generosity to someone who does not deserve it" (K. Barnwell). དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་རྗེ། the grace of God (Lk. 2:40), ཐུགས་རྗེ་བདེན་པས་གང་བ། full of grace and truth (Jn. 1:14), གཙོ་བོ་ཡེ་ཤུའི་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་སྒོ་ནས། through the grace of our Lord Jesus (Acts 15:11), དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་ཕྲིན་བཟང་། the gospel of God's grace (Acts 20:24), བཀའ་ཁྲིམས་ཀྱི་འོག་ན་མེད་པར་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་འོག་ཏུ་ཡོད། not under law, but under grace (Rom. 6:14), ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱི་དཀོན་མཆོག the God of all grace (1 Pet. 5:10), 2) also used in greetings: ཁྱེད་ཚོར་གཙོ་བོ་ཡེ་ཤུའི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་འབབ་པར་ཤོག the grace of the Lord Jesus be with you (1 Cor. 16:23).
Buddhist: 1) compassion, defined as the wish for all sentient beings to be free from suffering. In Bsm. compassion generates merit for the one who feels it. It does not involve forgiveness of sins, but does imply showing kindness to those who may not deserve it. The term is not used in daily speech but is common in Bsm. (AMD). 2) grace; in a general sense, the boddhisattvas are considered to exhibit grace when they show the path of release from suffering to living beings (MTB 195); hence: ང་ལ་བླ་མས་ཐུགས་རྗེ་རྒྱང་ནས་གཟིགས། may the lama look upon me with compassion (KPU 35); 3) one of the names of སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས། Chenresi: ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཆེན་པོ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། homage to great compassion (UCO 148).
[hon. བཀའ་དྲིན།]
Biblical: 1) kindness, gift: དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་བཀའ་དྲིན། the gift of God's grace (Eph. 3:7 SV); ཁྱེད་ཐར་བར་གྱུར་པ་ནི་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་གནང་སྦྱིན་ཡིན་ཏེ་དད་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་འོངས། ཁྱེད་རང་ནས་མ་བྱུང་། དཀོན་མཆོག་གི་བཀའ་དྲིན་ཡིན། it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God (Eph. 2:8 SV); 2) grace: དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་མ་ཀེ་དོན་ཡ་ཡུལ་གྱི་ཆོས་ཚོགས་རྣམས་ལ་གནང་བའི་བཀའ་དྲིན། the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches (2 Cor. 8:1 SV), ངེད་ཀྱི་གཙོ་བོ་ཡེ་ཤུ་མ་ཤི་ཀའི་བཀའ་དྲིན། the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Cor. 8:9 SV), དྲིན་དེ་ཡང་རྒྱས་པར་བྱོས་ཤིག excel also in the grace of giving (2 Cor. 8:7 SV).
Buddhist: kindness. True བཀའ་དྲིན་ཆེ། (great kindness) happens when the three jewels དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ། give refuge protection to beings experiencing obstacles (KTM). སྐུ་དྲིན་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀུན་ལས་ལྷག་པའི་མགོན། of all the Buddhas, he is the kindest (HTE 182); བོད་མི་རྣམས་ལ་བཀའ་དྲིན་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཆེ་བ་ཡིན་ཙང་། because this was a great kindness to the Tibetan people (TRC 113); ཕ་མ་བཟང་པོ་བཀའ་དྲིན་ཅན། good and kind parents (TRC 218); བཀའ་དྲིན་ཚད་མེད་པ། immeasurable kindness (TRC 331); གཞན་གྱི་བཀའ་དྲིན་ལ་བརྟེན། to depend on others' kindness (DLP 15); དགོངས་ནས་རང་དྲིན་རང་ལ་ཆེ་བར་མཛོད། think about it and do yourself a big favor (HTE 172).
