  1. འགྱོད་​ཚངས་​བྱེད།

    p. བྱས། f. བྱ། imp. བྱོས། [lit. regret + pure]

    Biblical: to acknowledge wrongdoing and turn from it; to confess and repent: འགྱོད་​ཚངས་​བྱས་​ནས་​ཐོག་​མར་​གང་​བྱས་​པ་​ལྟར་​བྱོས་​ཤིག repent and do the things you did at first (Rev. 2:5), རྐུ་​བ་​ལས་​ཀྱང་​འགྱོད་​ཚངས་​མ་​བྱས་​སོ། [they] did not repent of their thefts (Rev. 9:21), ཁྱོད་​ཅག་​འགྱོད་​ཚངས་​བྱེད་​ཕྱིར་​ངས་​ཆུའི་​ཁྲུས་​གཏོང་​གིས། I baptize you with water for repentance (Mt. 3:11).

  2. འགྱོད་​ཚངས།

    [lit. regret + pure]

    Biblical: repentance: འགྱོད་​ཚངས་​དང་​མཚུངས་​པའི་​འབྲས་​བུ་​སྐྱེད་​ཅིག produce fruit in keeping with repentance (Mt. 3:8), འགྱོད་​ཚངས་​ཀྱི་​ཁྲུས། a baptism of repentance (Mk. 1:4), སྡིག་​ཅན་​རྣམས་​འགྱོད་​ཚངས་​ཕྱིར་​འབོད་​དུ་​འོངས་​པ་​ཡིན། I came to call sinners to repentance (Lk. 5:32).

    Buddhist: འགྱོད་​ཚངས། is: སྔར་​བྱས་​ཀྱི་​ཉེས་​པར་​གནོང་​ཞིང་​། བཤགས་​པས་​སེམས་​རྒྱུད་​དག་​གཙང་​དུ་​གྱུར་​བ། to have a clean heart through remorse for and confession of past evil actions (TDC 509). In this sense it comes close to the Biblical ideal of repentance.

  3. འགྱོད་​པ་​བྱེད་​པ།

    p. བྱས། f. བྱ། imp. བྱོས།

    Biblical: to regret or be sorry for an action: ཁོས་​འགྱོད་​ན་​བཤགས་​པ་​བློང་​། if he repents, forgive him (Lk. 17:3), ང་​འགྱོད་​དོ། I repent (Lk. 17:4).

    Buddhist: see འགྱོད་​པ། below.

  4. འགྱོད་​པ།

    Biblical: regret, contrition, or repentance: འགྱོད་​པས་​ཕྱིས་​མི་​འཚར་​བའི་​ཐར་​ལམ་​ལ་​བཀོད། brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret (2 Cor. 7:10).

    Buddhist: འགྱོད་​པ། is one of the four so-called changeable factors གཞན་​འགྱུར་​བཞི། which may be either positive or negative; e.g. one may regret (འགྱོད་​པ།) a virtuous action if it does not turn out well, and decide to do evil in the future (KBT 26). 1) འགྱོད་​པ། is simple regret, without any moral component: དེ་​རིང་​ཤི་​ཡང་​མི་​འགྱོད། even if you die today, don't be sorry (HTE 180), ཤི་​ཡང་​མི་​འགྱོད་​དོ། if I die, I have no regrets (UCO 151); 2) འགྱོད་​པ། may also express sorrow for sin: སེམས་​ལ་​འགྱོད་​པ་​ཆེན་​པོ་​སྐྱེད་​དོ། I felt very sorry [for my sin] (DPD), སོ་​མ་​པུ་​རིའི་​མི་​ཀུན་​འགྱོད་​པ་​སྐྱེད་​ནས། all who were in Somapuri deeply repented (BLI 314).

    Proverbs: 1) རང་​ནོར་​རང་​ལ་​བདག་​དུས་​བསམ་​བློ་​ཐོངས། ལྡེ་​མིག་​མི་​ལ་​ཤོར་​དུས་​འགྱོད་​པའི་​རྒྱུ། think while the matter is in your hands; when you have lost the key, it is a matter of regret (KPU 7); 2) ཕ་​མ་​ཡོད་​དུས་​བཀའ་​དྲིན་​མ་​བསམས་​པར། མེད་​དུས་​འགྱོད་​པ་​སྐྱེས་​པ་​ཐ་​མའི་​ཐ། be grateful while your parents are alive; regrets after their passing are worthless (KPU 32).

  5. སེམས་​སྒྱུར་​བ།

    [lit. mind + change, transform] p. བསྒྱུར། imp. སྒྱུར།

    Biblical: 1) to repent: སེམས་​མ་​བསྒྱུར་​པའི་​གྲོང་​ཁྱེར་​དག cities that did not repent (Mt. 11:20), ཡོ་​ནས་​ཆོས་​བཤད་​པ་​ལས་​སེམས་​བསྒྱུར། repented at the preaching of Jonah (Mt. 12:41), སེམས་​སྒྱུར་​ལ་​ཕྲིན་​བཟང་​ལ་​དད་​པ་​བྱོས། repent and believe the good news (Mk. 1:15), རང་​གི་​ལག་​པའི་​ལས་​ལས་​སེམས་​མ་​བསྒྱུར། did not repent of the work of their hands (Rev. 9:20); 2) repentance: ཚེ་​མཐའ་​མེད་​པ་​ཐོབ་​པའི་​ཕྱིར་​སེམས་​འགྱུར་​བ། repentance unto life (Acts 11:18), སྙིང་​པོ་​མེད་​པའི་​བྱ་​བ་​ལས་​སེམས་​སྒྱུར་​བ། repentance from acts that lead to death (Heb. 6:1,2); 3) change of mind: སེམས་​སྒྱུར་​མ་​བཏུབ། he could bring about no change of mind (Heb. 12:17).

    Buddhist: སེམས་​སྒྱུར་​བ། to change one's heart, as in believing in a new religion (AMD).
