  1. བྱམས་​པ།

    Biblical: 1) God's love for man: love དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​ཐུགས་​རྗེ་​དང་​བྱམས་​ཐུགས། God's kindness and love (Tit. 3:4); 2) Christian love in a general sense: བྱམས་​སེམས་​མེད་​ན། if I have not love (1 Cor. 13:1), བྱམས་​སེམས་​ལ་​བཟོད་​པ་​དང་​སྙིང་​རྗེ་​ཡོད། love is patient, love is kind (1 Cor. 13:4), བྱམས་​སེམས་​ཀྱིས་​བདེན་​པ་​སྨྲ། speaking the truth in love (Eph. 4:15), ཐུགས་​ཉིད་​ལས་​བྱུང་​བའི་​ཁྱེད་​ཀྱི་​བྱམས་​སེམས། your love in the Spirit (Col. 1:8), བྱམས་​སེམས་​གཅིག་​པ། having the same love (Phil. 2:2), སྙིང་​རྗེ་​དང་​ཞི་​བདེ་​དང་​བྱམས་​ཐུགས། mercy, peace, and love (Jude 2).

    Buddhist: 1) to consider highly, or to value: མི་​དམངས་​ཀྱི་​རྒྱལ་​ཁབ་​ལ་​མི་​དམངས་​རང་​གིས་​གཅེས་​པ། the people themselves love their country (KTM), ཨ་​མས་​པུ་​གུར་​རང་​གི་​སྲོག་​ལས་​ཀྱང་​གཅེས་​པར་​སྐྱོང་​། a mother values her children more highly even than their own life (TRC 330); 2) to take care of, as a parent takes care of a child and looks after its well being, or a teacher gives special attention and care to a student, fostering his abilities, attending to his needs, and watching over him (KTM). གཟུགས་​པོའི་​བདེ་​ཐང་​ལ་​གཅེས་​པ། to take care of the well being of the body (KTM); 3) to hold dear, to cherish, to show affection: གཅེས་​པའི་​གྲོགས་​པོ། dear friends (TRC 167), ང་​རང་​ཚོས་​བྱམས་​པོ་​དང་​གཅེས་​པོ་​བྱས་​ཏེ་​ཉར་​བའི་​ཁྱི་​ཕྲུག a puppy which we treat with love and affection (TRC 288), སྙིང་​དུ་​གཅེས་​པའི་​ཡིད་​འོང་​བྱམས་​པ། love which cherishes [even an enemy] from the heart (TRC 320), ཕྲུག་​གཅེས་​པར་​བྱས་​ཏེ། to cherish children (TRC 218).

  4. དགའ་​བ།

    Biblical: 1) to have strong attachment to: སུ་​ཞིག་​འཚོ་​བར་​རབ་​དགའ། whoever would love life (1 Pet. 3:10), རྫུན་​ལ་​དགའ། those who love falsehood (Rev. 22:15); 2) to be pleased or delighted with: ངའི་​སེམས་​དགའ་​བའི་​གཅེས་​པ། the one I love, in whom I delight (Mt. 12:18), སེམས་​དགའ་​བཞིན་​སྦྱིན་​པ་​ལ་​དཀོན་​མཆོག་​ཐུགས་​མཉེས་​སོ། God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:7), འདི་​ནི་​ང་​དགའ་​བའི་​ངའི་​སྲས་​གཅེས་​པ་​ཡིན། his is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased (Mt. 3:17), མ་​ཤི་​ཀ་​པ་​རྣམས་​དགའ་​བའི་​ཕྱིར། [that it] may please the saints (Rom. 15:30,31); 3) as hyperbole for "to like": སྨོན་​ལམ་​འདེབས་​པ་​ལ་​དགའ་​བའི་​ཁ་​ཆོས་​པ། the hypocrites who love to pray (Mt. 6:5), ཁྲོམ་​དུ་​ཕྱག་​ལ་​དགའ་​བས། [Pharisees] love greetings in the marketplaces (Lk. 11:43).

    Buddhist: 1) to be happy or joyful (see joy): སེམས་​ཧ་​ཅང་​དགའ་​ནས་​གད་​མོ་​ཆེན་​པོ་​དགོད་​པ། to laugh much from a very happy heart (KTM); 2) love which is conditional or from which one gets benefits: དཔོན་​པོ་​ཕལ་​ཆེར་​ངོ་​བསྟོད་​ལ་​དགའ། བླ་​མ་​ཕལ་​ཆེར་​འབུལ་​བ་​ལ་​དགའ། བྱིས་​པ་​ཕལ་​ཆེར་​རྩེད་​མོ་​ལ་​དགའ། masters usually like praise, lamas usually like offerings, and common people usually like games (KTM); 3) to like; to be pleased with or take pleasure in: ལེ་​ལོ་​ལ་​དགའ་​བའི་​གླེན་​ཆོས། a foolish doctrine which pleases laziness (TRC 166), གཞན་​གྱི་​སྲོག་​གཅོད་​པ་​ལ་​དགའ་​བ། pleasure in killing another (TRC 245), རང་​གི་​སྐུ་​མཆེད་​གཞོན་​པས་​རྒྱལ་​ས་​འཛིན་​པ་​ལ་​མི་​དགའ་​བ། displeased at his younger brother having the kingdom (TRC 114); 4) to favor, be partial to: བོན་​གྱི་​ཆོས་​ལུགས་​ལ་​དགའ་​བའི་​བློན་​པོ། ministers who favored the Bon religion (TRC 114).

  5. ཆགས་​པ།

    Biblical: to love or be attached to, usually in a negative sense: 1) to lust for, to have strong attachment to: དངུལ་​ལ་​ཆགས་​པ། love of money (Lk. 16:14), འོད་​ལས་​མུན་​པར་​ལྷག་​པར་​འཆགས། men loved darkness more than light (Jn. 3:19), མི་​རྣམས་​རང་​ལ་​ཆགས་​མཁན། lovers of themselves (2 Tim. 3:2), དེ་​མ་​འཇིག་​རྟེན་​ལ་​ཆགས་​ཏེ། Demas, who loved this world (2 Tim. 4:9,10), མི་​རིགས་​པའི་​འབྲས་​བུ་​ལ་​ཆགས་​པས། loved the wages of wickedness (2 Pet. 2:15), འཇིག་​རྟེན་​ནང་​ཡོད་​པའི་​དངོས་​པོ་​ལ་​མ་​ཆགས་​ཤིག do not love the things in the world (1 Jn. 2:15), དེ་​ཚོ་​དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​བཀུར་​སྟི་​ལས། མིའི་​བཀུར་​སྟི་​ལ་​ལྷག་​པར་​ཆགས། they loved praise from men more than praise from God (Jn. 12:43); 2) used in SV for man's love of God: དཀོན་​མཆོག་​ལ་​ཆགས་​པ་​རྣམས། those who love God (1 Cor. 2:9 SV), དེ་​དག་​གིས་​བདེན་​པ་​ཉིད་​ལ་​ཆགས་​པ། they did not love the truth (2 Thes. 2:10 SV), དཀོན་​མཆོག་​ལ་​ཆགས་​པ་​ནི་​ཁོང་​གི་​བཀའ་​རྒྱ་​སྲུང་​བ་​དེ་​ཡིན་​ནོ། this is love for God: to obey his commands (1 Jn. 5:3 SV).

    Buddhist: In a religious context ཆགས་​པ། is an undue love for someone or something, the desire to have an excess, or to have an undue attachment. It is one of the chief causes of rebirth (KTM). བདག་​ཏུ་​ཆགས་​པ། attachment to the idea of a self (KBT 31), སྔར་​ཉ་​ལ་​ཆགས་​པའི་​དབང་​གིས། on account of his former attachment to [eating] fish (TRC 258), མི་​འབྲལ་​བར་​འདོད་​པའི་​ཆགས་​པ་​གཅིག a desire not to be separated [from its object] (TRC 284), ཆགས་​པ་​སྤོང་​བ་​རྒྱལ་​སྲས་​ལག་​ལེན་​ཡིན། to abandon attachment is the practice of the sons of the Buddha (GSL 26).

  6. བརྩེ་​བ།

    Biblical: affectionate or relational love: དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གིས་​རང་​གི་​ཐུགས་​བརྩེ་​བ་​ང་​ཚོ་​ལ་​མངོན་​པར་​མཛད་​དོ། God demonstrates his own love for us (Rom. 5:8 SV).

    Buddhist: བརྩེ་​བ། may be of two types: 1) love of parents for children: ཕྲུ་​གུ་​ལ་​བརྩེ་​བ། love for children (KTM), བྱམས་​དང་​བརྩེ་​བ་​ཅན་​གྱི་​དྲིན་​ཆེན་​མ། a most affectionate and loving mother (KPU 29); 2) altruistic love: In Bsm. one cultivates the desire for the welfare of all beings (བྱམས་​པ།). From this attitude one then generates a feeling of compassion (སྙིང་​རྗེ།), affection, or fondness for those beings which is བརྩེ་​བ། (KTM), e.g. the love of a lama for people (AMD), བརྩེ་​སེམས་​ངོ་​མ་​ནི་​ཆགས་​ཞེན་​གྱི་​གཞི་​ལས་​བྱུང་​བ་​མ་​ཡིན། real love is not based on attachment (DLP 14), རང་​རེས་​བརྩེ་​སེམས་​ཇི་​ལྟ་​བུ་​ཞིག་​སྐྱེད་​དགོས་​ཟེར་​ན། རང་​ལ་​གནོད་​འཚེ་​བྱེད་​མཁན་​གྱི་​དགྲ་​བོ་​ལའང་​བྱམས་​པ་​དང་​བརྩེ་​བའི་​སེམས་​སྐྱེད་​པ་​དེ་​འདྲ་​ཞིག་​དགོས། the kind of love we should advocate is this wider love that you can have even for someone who had done harm to you: your enemy (DLP 14), བོད་​ཀྱི་​ནང་​པ་​སངས་​རྒྱས་​པའི་​ཆོས་​ལུགས་​ཀྱི་​ཐོག་​ནས་​སེམས་​ཅན་​ཐམས་​ཅད་​རང་​གི་​སྙིང་​ནས་​བརྩེ་​བའི་​མ་​ལྟ་​བུར་​བལྟ་​དགོས་​པ་​དང་​། དེ་​དག་​ཚང་​མར་​བརྩེ་​སེམས་​ལྡན་​པའི་​སྒོ་​ནས་​དྲིན་​གཟོ་​བྱ་​དགོས་​པའི་​སློབ་​སྟོན་​བྱེད་​སྲོལ་​ཡོད། the Tibetan Buddhist tradition teaches us to view all sentient beings as our dear mothers and to show our gratitude by loving them all (DLP 15), གཞན་​ལ་​བརྩེ་​ཞིང་​ཕན་​པ་​སྒྲུབ་​པའི་​བྱ་​བ། loving and serving others (DLP 16), གཞན་​ལ་​བརྩེ་​སེམས་​དང་​། བརྩི་​བཀུར་​བྱེད་​པ། love and respect for others (DLP 22), ནད་​པར་​རྗེས་​སུ་​བརྩེ་​བ། compassion and love for the sick (KTM).

    Biblical: 1) to love others: ང་​ཚོར་​བརྩེ་​བ། those [Christians] who love us (Tit. 3:15); 2) to love one's parents: ང་​ལས་​ཕའམ་​མ་​ལ་​ལྷག་​པར་​བརྩེ་​བ། the one who loves father or mother more than me (Mt. 10:37); 3) God's love for man: ཡེ་​ཤུས་​དེ་​ལ་​གཟིགས་​ཤིང་​ཐུགས་​བརྩེར་​དགོངས་​ནས། Jesus looked at him and loved him (Mk. 10:21).

    Cognates: 1) བརྩེ་​གདུང་​། affectionate love for others སྤུན་​གྱི་​བརྩེ་​གདུང་​། brotherly love (Rom. 12:10); 2) བརྩེ་​སེམས། love བརྩེ་​སེམས་​མེད་​པ། without love (2 Tim. 3:3).

  8. ཐུགས་​སུ་​བྱོན་​པ།

    Biblical: used of God's love for various individuals: ཡེ་​ཤུའི་​ཐུགས་​སུ་​བྱོན་​པའི་​ཉེ་​གནས། the disciple Jesus loved (Jn. 21:7), གཙོ་​བོའི་​ཐུགས་​སུ་​བྱོན་​པའི་​སྤུན། brothers loved by the Lord (2 Thes. 2:13).

    Buddhist: ཐུགས་​སུ་​བྱོན་​པ། to think highly of, to approve (KTM).
