gentleness

  1. སེམས་​དུལ་​བ།

    [lit. mind + tame; hon. ཐུགས་​དུལ་​བ།]

    Biblical: mildness, gentleness: མ་​ཤི་​ཀའི་​ཐུགས་​དུལ་​བ། the gentleness of Christ (2 Cor. 10:1), ཁྱེད་​ཚོའི་​སེམས་​དུལ་​བ་​དེ་​མི་​ཐམས་​ཅད་​ལ་​སྟོན་​ཅིག let your gentleness be evident to all (Phil. 4:5), སེམས་​དུལ་​བ་​དང་​གུས་​པ། gentleness and respect (1 Pet. 3:15), དུལ་​པོ་​དང་​། བཙུན་​པ། gentleness and self-control (Gal. 5:23).

    Buddhist: 1) དུལ་​བ། is the p. of འདུལ་​བ། to subdue, discipline, or tame: དགྲ་​མགོ་​འདུལ་​བ། to subdue an enemy (KPU 12); 2) in the Bst. scriptures the term is frequently used of wild animals becoming tame: དུག་​སྦྲུལ་​དེ་​ཞི་​ཞིང་​དུལ་​བར་​གྱུར། the poisonous snake became peaceful and tame (SGN 13): 3) by extension, the term is used of taming passions or of disciplining the mind: བདག་​འཛིན་​འདུལ་​བ། to tame self-grasping (UCO 150), རང་​རྒྱུད་​འདུལ་​བ། to tame one's stream of thought (GSL 18); 4) hence འདུལ་​བ། is commonly used as a term for the rules governing monastic behavior and discipline. The third major division of the Bst. scriptures, which deals with this topic, is called the འདུལ་​བ། [Skt. vinaya].

  2. སེམས་​འཇམ་​པ།

    Biblical: gentleness, tenderness: བྱམས་​པ་​དང་​འཇམ་​སེམས་​དང་​བཅས། in love with a gentle spirit (1 Cor. 4:21 SV), ཁྱེད་​ཅག་​སེམས་​འཇམ་​པ་​ཡིན་​པར་​མི་​ཐམས་​ཅད་​ཀྱིས་​ཤེས་​པར་​གྱུར་​ཅིག let your gentleness be evident to all (Phil. 4:5 SV), སྙིང་​བརྩེ་​བའི་​ཤུགས་​དང་​། དྲིན་​དང་​། དམན་​ས་​བཟུང་​བའི་​སེམས་​དང་​། འཇམ་​པའི་​སེམས། compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness (Col. 3:12 SV), ཁྱེད་​ཀྱི་​ནང་​ན་​འཇམ་​བོར་​བྱེད་​དེ་​བུ་​རྫིས་​ཕྲུ་​གུ་​སྐྱོང་​བ་​ལྟར་​ཁྱེད་​ཅག་​ལ་​དགའ་​བས། we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children (1 Thes. 2:7 SV).

    Buddhist: 1) སེམས་​པ་​ཞི་​འཇམ་​བཟོ་​བ། to make the mind calm (DLP 17), དོན་​རྩ་​འཇམ་​པོའི་​སྒོ་​ནས་​ལོན། to achieve one's goals peacefully (KPU 14); 2) compounds of འཇམ་​པ། are often used in honorific titles of Bst. gods and saints ཕགས་​པ་​འཇམ་​དཔལ། a name given to Chenresi which refers to Chenresi's compassionate and gentle ways (KTM), འཇམ་​དཔལ་​དབྱང་​། the boddhisattva Manjushri, རྗེ་​འཇམ་​དབྱངས་​ཆོས་​རྗེ། the founder of Drepung Monastery (DPD), འཇམ་​མགོན་​བླ་​མ་​ཙོང་​ཁ་​པ། Tsong Khapa (DPD).

    Cognates: 1) འཇམ་​པོའི་​གྱོན། good clothes (KPU 23); 2) འཇམ་​ཤ་​ཐོན། to make smooth, to polish metals (KPU 28); 3) འཇམ་​པ་​བུ་​དང་​རྩུབ་​པ་​ཕ་​མས་​བྱེད། when comfortable the baby sleeps, when uncomfortable the parents work (KPU 31).
