conscience

  1. ཤེས་​བཟང་​།

    [lit. knowledge + good]

    Biblical: used in the Revised NT for "conscience", but not a widely understood term. Conscience is a Biblical concept implying an inner moral judgement: ཁ་​ཅིག་​གིས་​ཤེས་​བཟང་​སྤངས་​ཏེ་​དད་​པ་​ནུབ་​བོ། some have lost their faith by abandoning their conscience (1 Tim. 1:19), དེ་​ཚོའི་​བློ་​གྲོས་​དང་​། བཤེས་​བཟང་​གཉིས་​ཀ་​གྲིབ་​ཅན་​ཡིན། both their minds and consciences are corrupted (Tit. 1:15), བསྙེན་​བཀུར་​བྱེད་​པ་​དེའི་​ཤེས་​བཟང་​ཕུན་​སུམ་​ཚོགས་​པ་​བྱེད་​མི་​ཐུབ། the conscience of the worshiper could not be made clear (Heb. 9:9).

    Buddhist: The inner moral awareness of right and wrong can be expressed by: ལེགས་​ཉེས་​འབྱེད་​པའི་​བློ་​ཡི་​ནུས་​པ། the ability to decide between right and wrong (DLP 23). See shame.

  2. བཟང་​ངན་​ཤེས་​པ།

    [lit. good + bad + know]

    Biblical: conscience; used in various compounds: རང་​གི་​བཟང་​ངན་​རྟོགས་​པའི་​ཤེས། their consciences bearing witness (Rom. 2:15 SV), མི་​ཐམས་​ཅད་​ཀྱི་​བཟང་​ངན་​ཤེས་​པ། every man's conscience (2 Cor. 4:2 SV), བཟང་​ངན་​ཤེས་​པ་​བཟང་​པོ། a good conscience (1 Tim. 1:5 SV), ཤེས་​པ་​བཟང་​པོ་​ཞིག a clear conscience (Heb. 13:18 SV).

  3. སྙིང་​།

    [lit. heart]

    Biblical: physical heart; also used figuratively to mean emotions or moral nature; conscience: སྙིང་​དྲང་​པོའི་​ངང་​ནས། on account of conscience (Rom. 13:5 SV), དེ་​དག་​གི་​སྙིང་​བརྟན་​པོ་​མེད། their conscience is weak (1 Cor. 8:7 SV), སྙིང་​དག་​པའི་​ངང་​ལ། with a clear conscience (2 Tim. 1:3 SV), དེ་​དག་​གི་​བློ་​དང་​སྙིང་​ལ་​གྲིབ་​ཕོག་​པ་​ཡིན། both their minds and consciences are corrupted (Tit. 1:15 SV), ཁྱེད་​ཀྱི་​སྙིང་​ཤི་​བ་​ཡིན་​པའི་​ལས་​རྣམས་​ལས་​འདག་​པར་​མཛད་​པར་​འགྱུར། cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death (Heb. 9:14 SV).

  4. འགལ་​མཐུན་​ཤེས་​པ།

    [lit. oppose + agree + know]

    Biblical: conscience: འགལ་​མཐུན་​ཤེས་​པའི་​ཕྱིར་​མ་​ཟ་​ཞིག do not eat for conscience' sake (1 Cor. 10:28 SV).
