teacher [teacher of the law]

  1. སློབ་​དཔོན།

    Biblical: teacher: སློབ་​དཔོན་​ལས་​སློབ་​མ་​མི་​ཆེ། a student is not above his teacher (Mt. 10:24), སློབ་​དཔོན་​བྱེད་​ནུས་​པ། able to teach (2 Tim. 2:24), སློབ་​དཔོན་​མང་​པོར་​མ་​གྱུར་​ཅིག not many of you should presume to be teachers (Jas. 3:1).

    Buddhist: The Bst. scriptures encourage students to view their teachers as the Buddha himself and to overlook any flaws he may have (JPG 31). སློབ་​དཔོན། 1) a term of respect for an aged and wise teacher (AMD); 2) a spiritual master [Skt. acarya]: རྒྱ་​གར་​ནས་​སློབ་​དཔོན་​ཀུ་​མར་​དང་​། བལ་​ཡུལ་​གྱི་​སློབ་​དཔོན་​ཤི་​ལ་​མན་​ཇུ་​ཞུ་​བ་​གདན་​དྲངས། [he] invited the teacher Kumara from India and the teacher Silamanju from Nepal (TRC 113); སློབ་​དཔོན་​ཆེན་​པོ་​པད་​མ་​འབྱུང་​གནས། the great teacher Padmasambhava (TRC 113).

    Cognates: 1) སློབ་​མཁན། teacher སློབ་​མཁན་​རྣམས་​ལ་​ཁྲིམས་​ལྷག་​པར་​དམ་​པོ་​གཅད་​པར་​ངེས་​པས། we who teach will be judged more strictly (Jas. 3:1); 2) སློབ་​འཁྲིད། or འཁྲིད་​དཔོན། lead teacher (TRC 51); 3) སློབ་​མ། disciple.

  2. སྟོན་​པ།

    Biblical: teacher: སྟོན་​པ་​ལགས། Teacher (Mt. 22:16).

    Buddhist: སྟོན་​པ། 1) an honorific form used to refer to the founder of a religion such as Jesus or the Buddha (AMD): སྟོན་​པ་​ཆེན་​པོ་​རྣམས་​ཀྱིས་​རང་​གི་​རྗེས་​འབྲངས་​སློབ་​མ་​རྣམས་​མ་​རིག་​པས་​ཀུན་​ནས་​བསླངས་​པའི་​སྡིག་​སྤྱོད་​ཀྱི་​ལམ་​ལས་​སྐྱབས། the great teachers wanted to lead their followers away from the paths of negative deeds caused by ignorance (DLP 18); 2) the Buddha (KTM): སྟོན་​པ་​སངས་​རྒྱས། or སྟོན་​པ་​ཤ་​ཀྱ་​མུ་​ནི། Buddha the teacher (TRC 76/112), སྟོན་​པ་​ཕུན་​སུམ་​ཚོགས་​པ། an excellent teacher, one of the five excellences or ཕུན་​སུམ་​ཚོགས་​པ་​ལྔ། (TRI 172), སྟོན་​པ་​ཡང་​དག་​པ། the perfect teacher (TRC 73); 3) teachers of other Bst. schools: མུ་​སྟེགས་​པའི་​སྟོན་​པ་​དྲུག the six teachers of the extremist school (TRC 27).

    Proverbs: 1) བླ་​མ་​སྤྱན་​རས་​གཟིགས་​དང་​དབྱེར་​མེད་​དུ། [seeing] the teacher as not different from Chenresi (HTE 182); 2) དགེ་​རྒན་​བཟང་​པོའི་​དགེ་​ཕྲུག from a good teacher come good children (TQP 64).
