  1. སྟོན།

    p. བསྟན། imp. སྟོན།

    Biblical: to teach: ཆོས་​སྟོན་​པ་​དང་​འཆད་​པ། to teach and preach (Mt. 11:1), འདུ་​ཁང་​ནང་​ཆོས་​བསྟན་​པས། teaching in the synagogue (Mk. 6:2), ལྟ་​བ་​ཐ་​དད་​པ་​མ་​སྟོན། not to teach different doctrines (1 Tim. 1:3,4).

    Buddhist: The historical Buddha was originally regarded as a teacher (see teacher) and this function is now thought to have passed to other Buddhas as well: ཆོས་​ཉིད་​བདེན་​པ་​བསྟན་​པས་​གྲོལ་​བར་​འགྱུར། [the Buddhas] deliver by teaching this very dharma (TRC 77). A teaching function is ascribed to the doctrine: ལེགས་​ཉེས་​ཀྱི་​གནས་​ཚུལ་​གསལ་​བར་​སྟོན་​པའི་​ཆོས། the doctrine which teaches clearly the way of good and evil (TRC 166); and to the Bst. scriptures: དོན་​དམ་​པའི་​ཆོས་​དཀོན་​མཆོག་​དེ་​དག་​ཕྱིན་​ཅི་​མ་​ལོག་​པར་​སྟོན་​པའི་​སངས་​རྒྱས་​ཀྱི་​བཀའ། the conventional dharma jewel is the scriptures of the Buddha which teach without error (TRC 75).

    Biblical: teach, instruct: དམ་​པའི་​ཐུགས་​ཉིད་​ཀྱིས་​ཁྱེད་​ལ་​བསླབ་​འོང་​། the Holy Spirit will teach you (Lk. 12:12), ཡོ་​ཧ་​ནན་​གྱིས་​རང་​གི་​སློབ་​མ་​ལ་​བསླབས་​པ་​ལྟར། ང་​ཚོ་​ལའང་​སྨོན་​ལམ་​འདེབས་​ཚུལ་​སློབ། as John taught his disciples to pray, teach us also how to pray (Lk. 11:1), གཞན་​ལ་​སློབ་​ཀྱང་​རང་​ལ་​མི་​སློབ་​བམ། you who teach others, do you not teach yourself (Rom. 2:21), བྱ་​འོས་​པའི་​ལས་​འདི་​རྣམས་​སློབ་​ཅིང་​སྐུལ་​ཅིག these are the things you are to teach and urge on them (1 Tim. 6:2).

    Secular: སློབ། the ordinary term for teaching: ཁོང་​ལ་​བོད་​སྐད་​དང་​བོད་​ཡིག་​སླབ་​གྱི་​ཡོད། I was teaching her Tibetan (DPD), བོད་​སྨན་​སྐོར་​གྱི་​སློབ་​ཁྲིད་​དང་​ཞིབ་​འཇུག་​གི་​ལས། the work of teaching and research on Tibetan medicine (TMB 25).

    Proverbs: བྱེད་​ལུགས་​མེད་​ཀྱང་​ཁ་​ལ་​ལུགས་​སློབས། if you don't teach your children how to do work, at least teach them how to eat (KPU 30).

  3. འཆད་​པ།

    Biblical: to preach or explain. According to the བོད་​རྒྱ་​ཚིག་​མཛོད་​ཆེན་​མོ། this verb has transitive (p. བཤད་​པ། imp. ཤོད།) and intransitive (p. ཆད་​པ། f. འཆད་​པ།) forms. These distinctions are not rigorously observed in the NT text. ཧེལ་​ལེན་​པ་​ཚོར་​ཆོས་​འཆད་​འོང་​ངམ། will he teach the Greeks? (Jn. 7:35), ཡེ་​ཤུའི་​མིང་​རྗོད་​ཅིང་​གཏམ་​དང་​ཆོས་​འཆད་​མི་​ཆོག་​ཟེར་​མོད། commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus (Acts 4:18).
