suffering

  1. སྡུག་​བསྔལ།

    Biblical: suffering: སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​ཆེན་​པོ་​བྱུང་​སྟེ། bringing great suffering (Acts 7:11), མ་​ཤི་​ཀའི་​སྡུག་​བསྔལ། the sufferings of Christ (2 Cor. 1:5). In the Bib. view, suffering, though evil in itself, has redeeming features: སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​ལས་​བཟོད་​སེམས། suffering [produces] endurance (Rom. 5:3,4), སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​གྱིས་​ཕུན་​སུམ་​ཚོགས་​པར་​མཛད་​པ། made perfect through suffering (Heb. 2:10). Suffering will be abolished in the new creation (Rev. 21:4).

    Buddhist: In Bsm. suffering is an unmitigated evil produced by the three root afflictions of desire འདོད་​ཆགས། hatred ཞེ་​སྡང་​། and ignorance གཏི་​མུག . Suffering includes virtually all of human experience; even worldly pleasure is considered to be suffering because it soon passes away. The eight archetypal sufferings of man or སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​བརྒྱད། are listed as: སྐྱེ་​བ། birth, རྒ་​བ། old age, ན་​བ། sickness, འཆི་​བ། death, སྡུག་​པ་​དང་​བྲལ་​བ། separation from loved ones, མི་​སྡུག་​པ་​དང་​ཕྲད་​པ། meeting what one does not want, འདོད་​པ་​ཐུག་​ཏུ་​མ་​བབ་​པ། not getting what one wants, ཉེ་​བར་​ལེན་​པ། taking up the 5 skandhas, i.e. rebirth (DMP 241). Deliverance from suffering སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​ཐམས་​ཅས་​ལས་​ཐར། comes from taking refuge སྐྱབས་​སུ་​འགྲོ་​བ། in the three jewels དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གསུམ།.

    Biblical: to suffer, to experience suffering: མཁན་​པོ་​རྣམས་​ལས་​སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​མང་​པོ་​མྱོང་​བ། suffer many things at the hands of the teachers of the law (Mt. 16:21), ཨམ་​ཆི་​མང་​པོ་​བསྟན་​ཀྱང་​སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​མང་​པོ་​མྱང་​། suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors (Mk. 5:26), ཁོང་​གི་​ཕྱིར་​དུ་​སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​མྱང་​བ། to suffer for him (Phil. 1:29).

    Buddhist: to suffer: རང་​གཅིག་​པུ་​གནས་​གཅིག་​ཏུ་​སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​མྱོང་​དགོས་​པ། he must experience the misery alone in a solitary place (TRC 272), ན་​བ་​དང་​། རྒ་​བའི་​སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​མྱོང་​སྐབས། when [we] experience the sufferings of sickness and old age (DLP 15), རྒྱ་​མིའི་​བསྟན་​གནོན་​འོག་​དུ་​སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​མྱོང་​། suffering under Chinese oppression (RRT 282, n. 17).

  3. མནར་​བ།

    Biblical: to suffer torment, be tortured: མིའི་​བུའང་​དེ་​རྣམས་​ཀྱི་​ལག་​ནས་​མནར་​འོང་​། the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands (Mt. 17:12), མི་​འཆི་​བའི་​མེའི་​ཆད་​པས་​མནར་​བ། suffer the punishment of eternal fire (Jude 7).

    Buddhist: ང་​རང་​ཚོ་​ནད་​ཀྱི་​མནར་​བ་​ན། when we are suffering from an illness (TRC 257); སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​གྱིས་​མནར་​བ། the misery of suffering (TRC 342).

    Cognates: 1) མནར་​མེད། the hottest and most terrible of the eight hot hells (TRC 229); 2) མནར་​གཅོད་​གཏོང་​བ། to torture (DLP 9); མནར་​སེམས། a grudge, ill will (TRI 156).
