self-control

  1. བཙུན་​པ།

    [lit. honorable, faithful, respectable]

    Biblical: self-disciplined, not impulsive or brash; restrained in behavior: དུལ་​པོ་​དང་​། བཙུན་​པ། gentleness and self-control (Gal. 5:23), གཞོན་​པ་​རྣམས་​བཙུན་​པར་​འགྱུར་​བར་​སྐུལ་​ཞིག encourage the young men to be self-controlled (Tit. 2:6), བཙུན་​པ་​དང་​། དྲང་​པོ་​དང་​། ཆོས་​བཞིན་​དུ་​གནས་​པ། self-controlled, upright and godly [lives] (Tit. 2:12).

    Buddhist: 1) a temperate, self-controlled, and peaceful demeanor that is expressed in body, speech, and mind (TDC 2200); 2) an honorific term for a monk or nun: བཙུན་​པ་​བཙུན་​མ། monks and nuns (TRI 211).

  2. བག་​དང་​ལྡན་​པ།

    [lit. discreet, temperate] [var. བག་​ཡོད་​པ།]

    Biblical: temperate, self-controlled: བག་​དང་​ལྡན་​པ། མཁས་​པ། རྔམ་​བརྗིད་​དང་​ལྡན་​པ། མགྲོན་​པོར་​བྱམས་​པ། སློབ་​དཔོན་​བྱེད་​ནུས་​པ། temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach (1 Tim. 3:2), བག་​དང་​ལྡན་​པ། disciplined (Tit. 1:8), བག་​དང་​ལྡན་​པ་​དང་​། ཡ་​རབས་​དང་​། བཙུན་​པ། temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled (Tit. 2:2), བག་​དང་​ལྡན་​ཞིང་​གཅང་​གྲུང་​བྱོས་​ཤིག be self-controlled and alert (1 Pet. 5:8).

    Buddhist: བག་​ལྡན། ethical or moral behavior (TDC 1807).

  3. འཆུན་​པ།

    [lit. tame, controlled]

    Biblical: tamed, subdued, under control: དྲང་​བ་​ཉིད་​དང་​། རང་​ཉིད་​འཆུན་​པ། righteousness and self-control (Acts 24:25), སེམས་​མ་​ཆུན་​པ། without self-control (2 Tim. 3:3).

    Secular: འཆུན་​པ། to subdue or tame an animal: རྟ་​རྒོད་​པོ་​བཅུན་​ནས་​འཆུན་​པ། a wild horse that is brought under control (TDC 866).

    Proverbs: འདོད་​པའི་​རྟ་​རྒོད་​ཚོད་​ཀྱི་​སྲབ་​ཁ་​འཐེན། གང་​ས་​ཅི་​ཐད་​རང་​ཚོད་​རང་​གིས་​ཟུངས། just as a wild horse is controlled by a bridle, so you must have self-control (KPU 22).
