Biblical: used in compounds to mean complete removal or forgiveness of sins or offenses: སྡིག་པ་སེལ་བ། to forgive sin ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་སྡིག་པ་སེལ་བ་ཡིན། your sins are forgiven (Mt. 9:2), སྡིག་པ་སེལ་བའི་ཕྱིར། འགྱོད་ཚངས་ཀྱི་ཁྲུས་ཀྱི་ཆོས་བཤད། preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Mk. 1:4), ངེད་ཀྱིས་གཞན་ཉེས་སེལ་བ་ལྟར། །ངེད་ཀྱི་སྡིག་པ་སེལ་བར་མཛོད། forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors (Mt. 6:12), སྡིག་པ་དང་སྐུར་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་སེལ་བར་འགྱུར། every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men (Mt. 12:31). Other compounds of སེལ་བ། indicate clearance or forgiveness of many types of offense: 1) འཁོན་སེལ་བ། to forgive grudges སུ་དང་འཁོན་ཡོད་ན་སེལ་ཞིག if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him (Mk. 11:25); 2) བསམ་པ་སེལ་བ། evil thoughts: ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་སྙིང་གི་བསམ་པ་དེ་སེལ་བ། he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart (Acts 8:22 23); 3) སྡིག་སྒྲིབ། evils, obscurations མིས་མི་རིགས་པར་བྱས་པ་འདག་ཅིང་། །སྡིག་སྒྲིབ་བསལ་བར་མཛད་ན་བདེ། blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered (Rom. 4:7 SV); 4) སྐྱོན་སེལ་བ། faults མ་ཤི་ཀས་ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་སྐྱོན་བསལ་བ་ལྟར། as the Lord forgave you (Col. 3:13 SV); 5) ཉེས་པ་སེལ་བ། transgressions: སུ་ཡི་ཉེས་པ་བསལ་མཛད་དེ། །ཉེས་སྡིག་སེལ་བའི་མི་རྣམས་བདེའོ། blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered (Rom. 4:7).

Buddhist: 1) སྡིག་པ་སེལ་བ། is to wipe away or remove faults committed through ignorance or imperfect religious practice. The underlying idea is cleaning up or removing stains from something that is fundamentally perfect, as in wiping dirt from a mirror. In Bsm. this is accomplished through religious practice, and it is in this sense that Chenresi or the Dalai Lama are said to remove sins. Prayers for such forgiveness are not unknown (MTB 196). 2) The term is also used of Bst. practice as a means of clearing up or removing suffering: གནོད་པ་དང་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཐམས་ཅད་སེལ་བར་བྱེད་པ། to clear away all suffering and harm (TRC 330); or clearing away ignorance: གཏི་མུག་གི་མུན་པ་སེལ་བ། clearing away the darkness of ignorance (TRC 166); 3) སེལ་བ། is a technical term in Bst. logic, meaning all things except one specified (TRI 287).

Cognates: 1) ནད་སེལ་བ། to cure a disease: ནད་སེལ་བའི་སྨན་ལ་ཞིམ་པོ་མེད། medicine which takes away sickness is not tasty (KTM), གློག་པར་ནང་ལ་ནད་མེད་པ་བསལ་པོ་སྟན་ཏོ། the x-ray was clear of disease (DPD); 2) དཀའ་རྙོག་སེལ་བ། to solve problems (DLP 4).

  2. བཟོད་པ།
