Biblical: prayer: འགོང་རིགས་འདི་སྨོན་ལམ་གྱིས་མ་གཏོགས་འཐོན་མི་ཐུབ། this kind can come out only by prayer (Mk. 9:29), དཀོན་མཆོག་གིས་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་སྨོན་ལམ་གསན་པས། God has heard your prayer (Lk. 1:13), སྙུང་གནས་དང་སྨོན་ལམ། fasting and prayer (Lk. 2:37), སྨོན་ལམ་དང་སྦྱིན་པ་རྣམས། prayers and gifts to the poor (Acts 10:4), སྨོན་ལམ་ནང་འདི་ལྟར་དྲན། remembering [you] in my prayers (Eph. 1:15,16), དམ་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་སྨོན་ལམ། prayers of the saints (Rev. 8:4).
Buddhist: 1) སྨོན་ལམ། is the wish or desire of the mind (TDC 2175), which may be a request for some blessing or for the destruction of one's enemies སྨོན་ལམ་ལོག་པ། . It is generally believed to be of five types; e.g. for the mind of enlightenment, a good rebirth, good conditions for meditation, moral perfection, etc. (TRI 209); 2) another type of prayer accompanies an offering of the first portion of one's daily food and drink, and asks for the blessing of understanding the teachings of Bsm. (JPG 222).

Biblical: to pray: ཁྱེད་ལ་གཤེ་བ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་དོན་དུ་སྨོན་ལམ་ཐོབ། pray for those who mistreat you (Lk. 6:28), མཆོད་ཁང་ལ་སྨོན་ལམ་འདེབས་སུ་སོང་། [they] went to the temple to pray (Lk. 18:10), ཁོང་ཚོས་སྨོན་ལམ་བཏབ་ནས། ཕྱག་དབང་གནང་ངོ་། [the apostles] prayed and laid their hands on them (Acts 6:6), པུས་མོ་ས་ལ་བཙུགས་ཏེ། དེ་ཐམས་ཅད་དང་མཉམ་དུ་སྨོན་ལམ་བཏབ། he knelt down with all of them and prayed (Acts 20:36), དམ་པའི་ཐུགས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་མཐུས་སྨོན་ལམ་ཐོབ་ཅིག pray in the power of the Holy Spirit (Jude 20), ཐེངས་གསུམ་པར་སྔོན་བཞིན་སྨོན་ལམ་ཞུས། [Jesus] prayed the third time, saying the same thing (Mt. 26:44), ཡབ་ལ་སྨོན་ལམ་ཞུས། pray to your Father (Mt. 6:6), སྤུན་རྣམས། ང་ཚོའི་ཕྱིར་སྨོན་ལམ་ཞུས་ཤིག brothers, pray for us (1 Thes. 5:25), སྐད་གཞན་རྣམས་ནང་སྨོན་ལམ་ཞུ། to pray in other languages [or tongues] (1 Cor. 14:14).
Buddhist: ཤིང་གི་ལྷ་ལ་སྨོན་ལམ་བརྒྱབས། [she] prayed to the tree-spirit (SGN 10), ལུས་ངག་ཡིད་གསུམ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་སྨོན་ལམ་ཐོབས། pray with your body, speech, and mind (KPU 16), སྨོན་ལམ་འདེབས་པའི་གནས། the place of prayer (Acts 16:16).
Biblical: prayer as a request or petition for something: གསོལ་བ་དང་། སྨོན་ལམ་དང་། ཞུ་བ་དང་། གཏང་རག་ཕུལ། requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving (1 Tim. 2:1), སྨོན་ལམ་དང་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པས། [he] offered up prayers and petitions (Heb. 5:7).

Biblical: to request in prayer: ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་འཚེ་བ་པོའི་དོན་དུ་གསོལ་བ་ཐོབ། pray for those who persecute you (Mt. 5:44), ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་དད་པ་མི་ཡལ་ཕྱིར་ངས་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པ་ཡིན། I prayed that your faith may not fail (Lk. 22:32), གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ། I pray for them (Jn. 17:9), རྒྱུན་ཆད་མེད་པར་ཐུགས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་སྒོ་ནས། གསོལ་བ་སྨོན་ལམ་ཐོབ་ཅིག pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests (Eph. 6:18), གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་པ་ལ་བརྩོན། wrestling in prayer (Col. 4:12), ཉིན་མཚན་མེད་པར་སྨོན་ལམ་དང་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་ཤིང་གནས་ཀྱང་། continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help (1 Tim. 5:5).
Buddhist: སློབ་མ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པ་བཞིན། according to the request of [the Buddha's] disciples (SGN 16).

Biblical: 1) solitary prayer, meditation: ཐུགས་དམ་ཕྱིར་གཅིག་པུར་རི་ལ་ཕེབས་སོ། he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray (Mt. 14:23), ཁོང་ནི་དབེན་པར་ཐུགས་དམ་ལ་བཞུགས་སོ། Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed (Lk. 5:16); 2) occasionally used of prayer generally: ཐུགས་དམ་དང་བཀའ་སྒྲོག་པའི་ཞབས་ཏོག prayer and the ministry of the word (Acts 6:4).
