  1. དབང་​།

    [hon. མངའ།]

    Biblical: 1) spiritual power or authority: དབང་​དང་​མཐུ་​ཡིས་​འགོང་​པོ་​ལ་​བཀའ་​གནང་​། with authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits (Lk. 4:36), དམྱལ་​བར་​དབྱུག་​པའི་​དབང་​། power to throw you into hell (Lk. 12:5), བདུད་​ཀྱི་​དབང་​། the power of Satan (Acts 26:18), ཁྱོད་​ཀྱི་​ནང་​ན་​ངའི་​དབང་​སྟོན་​པ། that I might display my power in you (Rom. 9:17), ལྟས་​སྟོན་​པའི་​དབང་​། miraculous powers (1 Cor. 12:10), སྡིག་​པའི་​དབང་​ནི་​བཀའ་​ཁྲིམས་​ཡིན། the power of sin is the law (1 Cor. 15:56), དབང་​དང་​སྲིད། powers and authorities (Col. 2:15); 2) legal power or authority: སྤྱི་​ཁྱབ་​ཀྱི་​ཁྲིམས་​དང་​དབང་​། the power and authority of the governor (Lk. 20:20), སྒྲོལ་​བའི་​དབང་​དང་​རྒྱང་​ཤིང་​ལ་​རྐྱོང་​བའི་​དབང་​། power to free you or to crucify you (Jn. 19:10).

    Buddhist: In an ultimate sense, power refers to the ability of the Buddhas to free all beings from suffering (JPG 200). Specific instances include: 1) tantric initiation or empowerment (TRI 189): རང་​སེམས་​གླ་​མར་​ཤེས་​ན་​དབང་​བཞི་​རྫོགས། if you recognize your own mind as the teacher, all four empowerments are complete (HTE 184); 2) miraculous or supernatural power: དབང་​བཅུ། the ten miraculous powers of a Buddha, including control of length of life, miracles, circumstances of rebirth, etc. (TRI 189); 3) faculty, sense, cognitive power: དབང་​ཤེས་​དང་​ཡིད་​ཤེས། sense consciousness and mental consciousness (TRC 166), དབང་​པོ་​ལྔ། the five physical senses: sight, hearing, etc. (TRI 190); 4) ability: དབང་​པོ་​ལྔ། the ability given by faith, effort, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom (the so-called དབང་​པོ་​ལྔ།) to propel one towards enlightenment (KBT 55), སྙིང་​རྗེའི་​དབང་​གིས། by the power of great compassion (TRC 341), གཏམ་​བརྗོད་​འདོད་​དབང་​། freedom of speech (RRT 282 n. 23).

  2. མངའ་​ཐང་​།

    Biblical: might, dominion, power, authority; especially in a political sense: རྒྱལ་​པོའི་​ཁྲིའམ་​སྲིད་​ཡིན་​རུང་​། །དབང་​དང་​མངའ་​ཐང་​ཡོད་​དོ་​ཅོག whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities (Col. 1:16), མངའ་​ཐང་​དང་​དབང་​དང་​སྟོབས། dominion, authority, and power (1 Cor. 15:24), དབང་​དང་​། སྲིད་​དང་​མངའ་​ཐང་​དང་​། རྒྱལ་​སྲིད། rule, authority, power, and dominion (Eph. 1:21), ཕོ་​ཉ་​དང་​། དབང་​དང་​། མངའ་​ཐང་​རྣམས་​ལ་​མངའ་​མཛད་​དོ། angels, authorities and powers in submission to him (1 Pet. 3:22), མངའ་​ཐང་​དང་​མཐུ་​སྟོབས། power and strength (Rev. 7:12).

    Proverbs: རྒྱལ་​པོ་​ཆེན་​པོ་​ཡུལ་​གྱི་​རྒྱན་​ཆ་​རེད། ཁྲིམས་​དང་​མཐུན་​ན་​རྒྱལ་​གཞིས་​མངའ་​ཐང་​ལྡན། a great king is the country's ornament; if he [rules] in accord with the law, his realm will be glorious and powerful (KPU 10).

  3. མཐུ་​སྟོབས།

    [lit. power + strength]

    Biblical: supernatural power or ability: ང་​ལས་​མཐུ་​སྟོབས་​ཆེ། one who is more powerful than I (Mt. 3:11), ཤེས་​རབ་​དང་​མཐུ་​སྟོབས། wisdom and miraculous powers (Mt. 13:54), དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​མཐུ་​སྟོབས། the power of God (Mt. 22:29), ཉིད་​ཀྱི་​ནང་​ནས་​མཐུ་​སྟོབས་​ཤིག་​ཐོན་​པ་​མཁྱེན་​ནས། realized that power had gone out from him (Mk. 5:30), ཁོང་​གི་​མཐུ་​སྟོབས་​ཐོག་​མེད་​དང་​ངོ་​བོ་​མི་​སྣང་​བ། [God's eternal power and divine nature (Rom. 1:20), མ་​ཤི་​ཀའི་​མཐུ་​སྟོབས། Christ's power (2 Cor. 12:9).

    Buddhist: 1) used of the power of the gods to change into other forms (AMD); 2) used of the secular might or power of kings, heroes, etc. (AMD).

  4. ནུས་​པ།

    Biblical: power, ability: སྡིག་​པ་​རྭ་​ཅན་​ལ་​ཡོད་​པའི་​ནུས་​པ་​ལྟ་​བུ། power like that of scorpions (Rev. 9:3).

    Buddhist: ability, capacity: འཇིགས་​པ་​ལས་​སྐྱོབ་​པའི་​ནུས་​པ། the capacity to save from fear (TRC 73), ཟ་​མི་​ནུས་​པ། unable to eat (TRC 229), སྡིག་​པ་​ཤིན་​ཏུ་​སྟོབས་​ཆེན་​མང་​པོ་​འཇོམས་​ནུས་​པ། the ability to overcome powerful evils (TRC 319), ལེགས་​ཉེས་​འབྱེད་​པའི་​བློ་​ཡི་​ནུས་​པ། the ability to decide between good and evil (DLP 23).

  5. ཤུགས།

    Biblical: physical strength, power, ability: ཟླ་​བ་​ལྔའི་​བར་​དུ་​ཟུག་​གཟེར་​བྱུང་​བའི་​ཤུགས། power to torment people for five months (Rev. 9:10).

    Cognates: 1) ཤུགས་​ཆེན་​པོ། intense, strong: སློབ་​གཉེར་​ཤུགས་​ཆེན་​པོ་​བྱེད་​མ་​ཐུབ་​པ། unable to do intense studying (TRC 4), དྲན་​པ་​ཤུགས་​ཆེན་​པོ། a strong power of attentiveness (TRC 200), ཆགས་​ཞེན་​ཤུགས་​ཆེ། passionate attachment (DLP 13); 2) ཤུགས་​སྣོན། to strengthen, reinforce, or give emphasis to: འཕྲུལ་​བཟོ་​རིག་​གནས་​ཀྱི་​ཐོག་​ཏུ་​ཤུགས་​སྣོན་​ཆེ་​དྲགས་​པ་​ཡིན་​ན། if we give too much emphasis to science and technology (DLP 2); 3) ཤུགས་​རྐྱེན། influence (SBC-1, 61); 4) རྡུལ་​ཕྲན་​གྱི་​སྟོབས་​ཤུགས། nuclear power རྡུལ་​ཕྲན་​གྱི་​སྟོབས་​ཤུགས་​ལྡན་​པའི་​དབུ་​ཁྲིད་​ཚོ། the leaders of the nuclear powers (DLP 7); 5) གློག་​ཤུགས། electric power: བཟོ་​ལས་​གློག་​ཤུགས་​ཐིང་​། industrial electric power department.
