1. ཤེས་​པ།

   [hon. མཁྱེན།]

   Biblical: know, understand: 1) to be acquainted with someone (see also ངོ་​ཤེས།): ཁྱེད་​སུ་​ཡིན་​ངས་​ཤེས། I know who you are (Mk. 1:24), ཁྱེད་​ཀྱིས་​ང་​ཤེས་​ན་​ངའི་​ཡབ་​ཀྱང་​ཤེས། if you knew me, you would know my Father as well (Jn. 14:7), སྐྱེས་​བུ་​དྲང་​པོ་​དང་​དམ་​པ་​ཡིན་​པར་​ཤེས་​ཏེ། knowing him to be a righteous and holy man (Mk. 6:20), དཀོན་​མཆོག་​ལ་​གཅེས་​པར་​འཛིན་​མཁན་​དེ། དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གིས་​ཁོ་​མཁྱེན་​ནོ། the man who loves God is known by God (1 Cor. 8:3); 2) to know facts: བཀའ་​དེ་​རྣམས་​ཁྱོད་​ཀྱིས་​ཤེས་​སོ། you know the commandments (Mk. 10:19), ངས་​མི་​ཤེས་​མི་​གོའོ། I don't know or understand (Mk. 14:68), ངས་​མི་​ཤེས་​ཏེ། དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གིས་​མཁྱེན་​ནོ། I don't know, God knows (2 Cor. 12:2), ཁོང་​གིས་​ཐམས་​ཅད་​མཁྱེན་​ནོ། [God] knows everything (1 Jn. 3:20), ཡེ་​ཤུས་​དེ་​ཚོའི་​བསམ་​པ་​མཁྱེན། Jesus knew their thoughts (Lk. 9:47), དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གིས་​ཁྱེད་​ཀྱི་​སྙིང་​མཁྱེན་​པས། God knows your hearts (Lk. 16:15); 3) to inform, let someone know: ལག་​པ་​གཡས་​པས་​ཅི་​བྱེད་​པ་​ལག་​པ་​གཡོན་​པ་​ལའང་​ཤེས་​མ་​ཆུག do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing (Mt. 6:3,4), །ཡེ་​ཤུས་​འདི་​སུས་​ཀྱང་​མི་​ཤེས་​པའི་​ཕྱིར་​ནན་​གྱིས་​བསྐུལ། he gave strict orders not to let anyone know (Mk. 5:43); 4) to have a skill or ability, to know a trade: སོང་​ལ་​ཤེས་​པ་​བཞིན་​སྲུང་​ཞིག་​ཞེས་​བསྒོ་​བས། go, make the tomb as secure as you know how (Mt. 27:65).

   Buddhist: The root meaning of ཤེས་​པ། is to know or understand 1) to know or be acquainted with a person: ཧ་​ལམ་​ངོ་​མི་​ཤེས་​མདོག་​མདོག་​བྱེད། to pretend to be almost unacquainted (TRC 167); 2) to know facts: དབྱར་​གནས་​གྲོལ་​བའི་​དུས་​ཚོད་​མི་​ཤེས་​ན། if one does not know the time of release from the summer retreat (TRC 50); 3) to recognize: སྡུག་​བསྔལ་​ཤེས་​པར་​བྱ། recognize suffering (TRC 165), མ་​རིག་​པ་​ནི། ལས་​རྒྱུ་​འབྲས་​ལ་​སོགས་​པ་​མི་​ཤེས་​པའི་​རྨོངས་​པ། nescience is the ignorance that does not recognize the [truth of] karma (TRC 284); 4) to understand: བདེན་​པ་​བཞིའི་​གནས་​ཚུལ་​ཤེས་​པའི་​སྒོ་​ནས། by means of understanding the realities of the Four Truths (TRC 165), དམངས་​གཙོའི་​ངོ་​བོ་​གསལ་​པོ་​ཤེས། one must clearly understand the essence of democracy (RRT 282-3 n. 24); 5) to know how to: ངོ་​ལ་​འཁོར་​བའི་​སྦྲང་​མ་​དཀྲོག་​མི་​ཤེས། they don't even know how to chase a fly from their face (KPU 31); 6) to be aware of; awareness, consciousness: ཤེས་​པའི་​མཚན་​ཉིད་​ཡོད། there is a definition of consciousness (TBT 498).

   Cognates: 1) ངོ་​ཤེས། [hon. ངོ་​མཁྱེན།] to recognize or be acquainted with someone or something: ཇི་​ལྟར་​ཡབ་​ཀྱིས་​ང་​ངོ་​མཁྱེན། །ཡབ་​ཀྱི་​ཞལ་​ངོ་​ངས་​ཤེས་​ལྟར། །ང་​ཡི་​ཡིན་​པ་​ངས་​ངོ་​ཤེས། །དེ་​ཚོས་​ང་​ལ་​ངོ་​ཤེས་​པས། I know my sheep and my sheep know me--just as the Father knows me and I know the Father (Jn. 10:14,15), ཉེ་​གནས་​དེ་​བླ་​ཆེན་​གྱི་​ངོ་​ཤེས་​ཡིན། that disciple was known to the high priest (Jn. 18:15); 2) ཤེས་​བཞིན། introspection: ཤེས་​བཞིན་​གྱིས་​དེ་​ཤེས་​པར་​བྱས། to recognize by introspective awareness (TRC 201); 3) ངེས་​ཤེས། confidence, certain knowledge: རིག་​པ་​དྭངས་​པས་​ཆོས་​ལ་​ངེས་​ཤེས་​སྐྱེ། as wisdom shines, our confidence in the dharma grows (GSL 6).

2. རྟོག

   p. བརྟགས། f. བརྟག imp. རྟོགས།

   Biblical: to know, understand: ཁོང་​དྲང་​པོ་​ལགས་​པར་​རྟོགས་​ན། if you know that he is righteous (1 Jn. 2:29), ཁོང་​ཉིད་​དང་​གཤིན་​པོ་​ལས་​སྐུ་​གསོན་​པོར་​བཞེངས་​པའི་​མཐུ་​ནུས་​རྟོགས་​པ། I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection (Phil. 3:10), གང་​གསུངས་​པའི་​དོན་​དེ་​རྣམས་​ཀྱིས་​མ་​རྟོགས་​སོ། they did not understand the meaning of what was said (Lk. 18:34).

   Buddhist: to perceive: བདག་​མེད་​པའི་​དོན་​མངོན་​སུམ་​དུ་​རྟོགས་​པའི་​ལམ་​གྱི་​བདེན་​བ། the truth of the path which directly perceives the absence of a self (TRC 96). see thought.
