  1. གཟི་​བརྗིད།

    [lit. shine + glory]

    Biblical: majesty, honor; the most common and general term for glory. God's glory is His honor and reputation, proclaimed through His mighty acts and revealed fully in Jesus Christ: 1) visible glory, radiance: རི་​སི་​ན་​ལ་​ཡ་​ཧོ་​ཝའི་​གཟི་​བརྗིད་​བཞུགས་​པ། the glory of the Lord settled on Mt. Sinai (Ex. 24:16), ཡ་​ཧོ་​ཝའི་​གཟི་​བརྗིད་​དེས་​བཞུགས་​གནས་​ཁྱབ་​བོ། the glory of the Lord filled [the tabernacle] (Ex. 40:34); 2) the glory of God and His Presence: ཁྱེད་​ཚོའང་​ཁོང་​དང་​མཉམ་​དུ་​གཟི་​བརྗིད་​དང་​ལྡན་​ཞིང་​མངོན་​པར་​འགྱུར་​རོ། you also will appear with him in glory (Col. 3:4), དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​གཟི་​བརྗིད་​ཀྱི་​འོད་​སྤྲོས་​ཏེ། the glory of God gives it light (Rev. 21:23), གཟི་​བརྗིད་​ཀྱི་​གཙོ་​བོ། the Lord of glory (1 Cor. 2:8); 3) the glory of angels: ཕོ་​ཉ་​དམ་​པ་​རྣམས་​ཀྱི་​གཟི་​བརྗིད། the glory of the holy angels (Lk. 9:26); 4) honor, fame, worth: མོ་​ཤེའི་​ཞལ་​གྱི་​གཟི་​བརྗིད། the glory of Moses' covenant (2 Cor. 3:7).

    Secular: གཟི་​བརྗིད། applied to persons means glorious in appearance or commanding attention; applied to buildings means magnificent or imposing (AMD).

  2. དཔལ།

    Biblical: magnificence, splendor, abundance, glory: 1) of God: དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​དཔལ་​དང་​བྲལ། fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23), ཉིད་​ཀྱི་​དཔལ་​མངོན་​པར་​མཛད། he revealed his glory (Jn. 2:11), གཙོ་​བོ་​ཡེ་​ཤུ་​མ་​ཤི་​ཀའི་​དཔལ། the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Thes. 2:14), ཀེ་​རུབ་​ཅེས་​པའི་​དཔལ་​ལྡན་​གྱི་​ཕོ་​ཉ། the cherubim of the Glory (Heb. 9:5); 2) glory generally: དཔལ་​མི་​འཚོལ། not to seek glory (Jn. 8:50), དཔལ་​དང་​ལྡན་​པར་​མངོན་​ཏེ། appeared in glorious splendor (Lk. 9:31), དཔལ་​དང་​བཀུར་​སྟི། glory and honor (Rom. 2:7), དཔལ་​དང་​བཀུར་​སྟིའི་​ཅོད་​པན་​གསོལ་​ཡོད། crowned with glory and honor (Heb. 2:9).

    Buddhist: 1) དཔལ། is a general literary term for glory, often used in poetry (AMD). ཆོས་​སྲིད་​རང་​དབང་​གཙང་​མའི་​དཔལ་​པ། the glory of full religious and secular independence (RRT 282 n. 22), བདེ་​སྐྱིད་​དང་​དཔལ། happiness and glory (DLP 9), གྲགས་​པའི་​དཔལ་​དེས་​ཀུན་​ཏུ་​ཤིས་​གྱུར་​ཅིག may the glory of your fame bring happiness everywhere (HTE 170); 2) used in honorific titles: དཔལ་​ལྡན། glorious ཇོ་​བོ་​རྗེ་​དཔལ་​ལྡན་​ཨ་​ཏི་​ཤ། the glorious lord Atisha (TRC 152), དཔལ་​ལྡན་​འབྲས་​སྤུངས། magnificent Drepung (DPD), དཔལ་​གྱི་​ཆོས་​སྡེ། an honorific title used of monasteries དཔལ་​གྱི་​ཆོས་​སྡེ་​ཆེན་​པོ་​བཀྲ་​ཤིས་​ལྷུན་​པོ། glorious Tashilhunpo monastery (MHP 7); 3) used in compounds such as དཔལ་​བརྗིད། and དཔལ་​འབྱོར། (see below).

  3. དཔལ་​བརྗིད།

    [lit. glory + shine]

    Biblical: glory: དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​དཔལ་​བརྗིད། God's glory (Jn. 21:19), ཉིད་​ཀྱི་​སྲས་​ཀྱི་​དཔལ་​བརྗིད་​སྟོན་​པར་​མཛོད་​ཅིག show forth the glory of your Son (Jn. 17:1), མི་​བརྒྱུད་​རྣམས་​ཀྱི་​དཔལ་​བརྗིད། the glory of the nations (Rev. 21:26), ས་​སྟེང་​དུ་​ཁྱེད་​ཀྱི་​དཔལ་​བརྗིད་​བསྟན་​པ་​ཡིན། I have brought you glory on earth (Jn. 17:4).

  4. དཔལ་​འབྱོར།

    [lit. glory + wealth]

    Biblical: abundant riches, wealth, abundance, or worldly splendor: དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གི་​ཉིད་​ཀྱི་​དཔལ་​འབྱོར། God's glorious riches (Phil. 4:19), གསང་​བའི་​དཔལ་​འབྱོར། the glorious riches of [this] mystery (Col. 1:26 27), ཁོང་​གི་​དཔལ་​འབྱོར་​སྟོན་​ཕྱིར། in order to make known the riches of his glory (Rom. 9:22-4), མ་​ཤི་​ཀ་​པའི་​ནང་​དུ་​ནོར་​སྐལ་​གྱི་​དཔལ་​འབྱོར། the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints (Eph. 1:18).

    Secular: 1) Wealthy people are said to be དཔལ་​འབྱོར། from their ability to accumulate wealth and status (KTM); 2) in modern Tib. དཔལ་​འབྱོར། is wealth or economy: དཔལ་​འབྱོར་​ཡར་​རྒྱས། economic development (DLP 8), འཆར་​འགོད་​དཔལ་​འབྱོར་​ཨུ་​ཡོན་​ལྷན་​ཁང་​། economic planning committee (MHP 10), དཔལ་​འབྱོར་​གྱི་​རིན་​ཐང་​། economic value (SLP 15).

  5. གྲགས་​པ།

    Biblical: glory, fame, reputation: ཁོ་​རྣམས་​ཀྱི་​གྲགས་​པ་​ནི་​ངོ་​ཚ་​ཡིན། their glory is in their shame (Phil. 3:19 SV), གྲགས་​པའི་​ཅོད་​པན། the crown in which [we] glory (1 Thes. 2:19 SV), ཁྱེད་​རྣམས་​ནི་​ངེད་​ཀྱི་​གྲགས་​པ་​དང་​དགའ་​སྤྲོ་​ཡིན། you are our glory and joy (1 Thes. 2:20 SV).

    Buddhist: 1) fame or renown: གྲགས་​པའི་​དཔལ་​དེས་​ཀུན་​ཏུ་​ཤིས་​གྱུར་​ཅིག may the glory of your fame bring happiness everywhere (HTE 170), ལུགས་​སྲོལ་​གྲགས་​ཆེ་​བ་​བཞི། the four better-known schools (TRC 135), གྲགས་​ཆེན་​བཅོ་​བརྒྱད། the 18 major texts of the Sakya school (TRI 38), ལོ་​རྒྱུས་​འཛམ་​གླིང་​འདིར་​གྲགས་​པ། a story which is well known in this present age (TRC 260), གྲགས་​པ་​ཕུལ་​བྱུང་​། a good reputation; 2) an epithet of Bst. saints: ཆོས་​གྲགས། or ཆོས་​ཀྱི་​གྲགས་​པ། Dharmakirti [7th cent. Bst. philosopher] (TRC 24), ཟླ་​བ་​གྲགས་​པ། Chandrakirti [8th cent. scholar] (TRC 25).

    Cognates: 1) སྐད་​གྲགས་​ཆེན་​པོ། fame ལྷ་​སའི་​གཙུག་​ལག་​ཁང་​སྐད་​གྲགས་​ཆེན་​པོ་​དེ་​གཉིས། the two famous temples in Lhasa (TRC 112-3), ཕྱི་​ནང་​དུ་​སྐད་​གྲགས་​ཆེན་​པོ། well-known at home and abroad (TMB 25); 2) སྲས་​མོ་​གྲགས་​འཛིན་​མ། the name of Prince Siddartha's wife (SGN 4).

  6. སྙན་​གྲགས།

    [lit. hearing + glory / reputation]

    Biblical: fame, honor, or good repute: 1) glory རང་​གི་​སྙན་​གྲགས་​འཚོལ། seeks his own glory (Jn. 7:18); 2) news, report ཁོང་​གི་​སྙན་​གྲགས་​སི་​རི་​ཡ་​ཡུལ་​ཀུན་​ཏུ་​དར་​བས། news about him spread all over Syria (Mt. 4:24), ཧེ་​རོ་​དེས་​ཡེ་​ཤུའི་​སྙན་​གྲགས་​ཐོས། Herod heard the reports about Jesus (Mt. 14:1); 3) fame: ཡེ་​ཤུའི་​སྙན་​གྲགས་​རྒྱས་​པས། Jesus' name had become well known (Mk. 6:14), ངའི་​སྙན་​གྲགས་​དར་​འཇུག་​པའི་​དོན་​དུ། that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth (Rom. 9:17).

    Buddhist: good repute, good name: བདེ་​སྐྱིད། སྙན་​གྲགས། happiness and a good name or reputation (TRC 217), འཛམ་​གླིང་​ཡོངས་​ལ་​སྙན་​གྲགས་​ཆེ་​བ་​ཕོ་​བྲང་​པོ་​ཏ་​ལ། the world famous Potala Palace (DPD), དགོན་​པ་​དེའི་​དགེ་​འདུན་​རྣམས་​མཚན་​སྙན་​གྲགས་​ཆེན་​པོ་​ཡོད། the monks from that monastery are well-known (DPD), ལྷ་​ས་​ནི་​སྙན་​གྲགས་​ཀྱི་​བ་​དན་​ཀུན་​ཏུ་​ཁྱབ། Lhasa is a famous city [lit. its banner of fame spreads everywhere] (SLR 14), བརྩམས་​ཆོས་​གྲགས་​ཆེན། a famous literary work (SBC 61).
