exalt

  1. འཕགས།

    Biblical: to be raised or exalted: ནམ་​མཁའ་​ལས་​ཀྱང་​འཕགས་​པ། exalted above the heavens (Heb. 7:26), དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གིས། །མཚན་​རྣམས་​ཡོངས་​ལས་​མཐོ་​བའི་​མཚན། །ཁོང་​ལ་​གནང་​ཞིང་​འཕགས་​པར་​མཛད། God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name (Phil. 2:9).

    Buddhist: Sublime, noble, or exalted; may be used of high lamas, a doctrine, or a student outstanding in his class (AMD). Hence འཕགས་​པ། is a common written term for boddhisattva. As an honorific, it is often applied to: 1) doctrines: འཕགས་​པའི་​བདེན་​པ་​བཞི། the four noble truths of Bsm. (CNG 28), འཕགས་​ལམ་​ཡན་​ལག་​བརྒྱད། the noble eightfold path (CNG 116), འཕགས་​པའི་​ནོར་​བདུན། the seven sublime treasures (SGN 16); 2) Bst. lamas or saints: འཕགས་​པ། a so-called Aryan individual; a person who through study and meditation obtains the power of direct perception of the true or real through yogic perception (TRC 73), འཕགས་​པ་​ལྷ། Aryadeva, a disciple of Nagarjuna (TRC 25), དབུ་​འཛིན་​ཁྱད་​དུ་​འཕགས་​པ་​ཀུན་​གཟིགས་​པན་​ཆེན་​ཨེར་​ཏེ་​ནི་​སྐུ་​ཕྲེང་​བཅུ་​པ། an outstanding leader, the 10th Panchen Lama (MHP 7), འཕགས་​པ་​ཀླུ་​སྒྲུབ། Nagarjuna (TRI 177); 3) Bst. gods: འཕགས་​པའི་​སྐུ། [lit. exalted body] Chenresi (HTE 190), འཕགས་​པ་​ནམ་​མཁའི་​རྒྱལ་​པོ། the sublime king of the sky (HTE 196), བྱང་​ཆུབས་​སེམས་​དཔའ་​ཆེན་​པོ་​འཕགས་​པ་​སྤྱན་​རས་​གཟིགས། the superior Avalokiteshvara (Chenresi) (HSU 166); 4) religious places: འཕགས་​པའི་​ཡུལ། India (KPU 2), ཕ་​རི་​སིའི་​འཕགས་​མའི་​མཆོད་​ཁང་​། Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (SBC-1 62).

    Secular: 1) one who is accomplished or superior: ལམ་​ལུགས་​ཁྱད་​དུ་​འཕགས་​པ། accomplished in ways and customs (KTM), སྟོབས་​ཤུགས་​བླ་​ན་​འཕགས་​པ། higher than any other in strength and ability (KTM); 2) above all, supremely: རང་​ཉིད་​སེམས་​ཅན་​གཞན་​ལས་​ཁྱད་​པར་​འཕགས་​པའི་​འགྲོ་​བ་​མིའི་​ཁྱིམ་​ཚང་​གི་​ནང་​མི་​ཞིག་​ཡིན་​པའི་​སེམས་​ཁུར་​འཛིན་​མཁན། one who sees himself above all as a member of the human family (DLP 16).

    Cognates: 1) འཕགས་​མཆོག sublime (HTE 200); 2) འཕགས་​སྐད། Sanskrit; 3) ཕུལ་​ཏུ་​ཕྱིན་​པ། accomplished (KTM).

  2. མཐོ་​བར་​བྱེད།

    Biblical: to raise, lift up, exalt: རང་​མཐོ་​བར་​བྱེད་​པ་​དེ་​དམའ་​བར་​འགྱུར་​འོང་​། whoever exalts himself will be humbled (Mt. 23:12), ནམ་​མཁའ་​རྣམས་​ལས་​མཐོ་​བར་​མཛད་​པར་​གྱུར་​པ་​ཞིག one who is exalted above the heavens (Heb. 7:26 SV).

    Buddhist: To lift up through verbal expression, to exalt, to extol (KTM).

    Cognates: 1) མཐོ་​རིས། higher rebirth (TRI 127); 2) ཆེས་​མཐོ། supreme ཆེས་​མཐོ་​བའི་​སྒྱུ་​ཙལ། supreme art (SBC-1 63); 3) མཐོ་​སར་​བཞག put in a high place: དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གིས་​ཁོང་​མཐོ་​སར་​བཞག་​སྟེ། God exalted him to the highest place (Phil. 2:9 SV).

    Biblical: to raise up, exalt: རང་​འདེགས་​པ་​དེ་​འབེབས་​པར་​འགྱུར། རང་​འབེབས་​པ་​དེ་​འདེགས་​པར་​འགྱུར་​རོ། everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted (Lk. 18:14).
