Biblical: 1) compassion: ཟ་རྒྱུ་མེད་པས་ང་སྙིང་རྗེའོ། because they have [had] nothing to eat, I have compassion [for them] (Mk. 8:2), ངས་ཐུགས་བརྩེ་དགོངས་པ་དེ་ལ་ཐུགས་བརྩེ་བྱ། སྙིང་རྗེ་དགོངས་པ་དེ་ལ་སྙིང་རྗེ་བྱའོ། I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion (Rom. 9:15), སྙིང་རྗེ་དང་ཤ་ཚ། compassion and affection (Phil. 2:1), སྙིང་རྗེ་དང་བཀའ་དྲིན། compassion and kindness (Col. 3:12), གཙོ་བོ་ནི་བྱམས་མགོན་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཅན་ཡིན། the Lord is compassionate (Jas. 5:11 SV); 2) mercy: སྙིང་རྗེ་ཅན་ཡིན་ན། if [one's gift is] showing mercy (Rom. 12:8); 3) kindness ཁོང་གི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་དང་། ཐུགས་བཟོད་དང་། ཐུགས་སྣ་རིང་བ། [God's] kindness, tolerance and patience (Rom. 2:4).
Buddhist: a mental attitude of sympathy towards the suffering of people or animals: སྐྱེས་བུ་ཆེན་པོ་ཟེར་བ་འདིས་སེམས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་ལ་བྱམས་པ་དང་། སྙིང་རྗེའི་བསམ་པ་སྦྱངས། the great individual practices the thought of love and compassion to all living creatures (TRC 218). It may be divided into: 1) compassion felt in the actual presence of suffering: སེམས་ཅན་ལ་དམིགས་པའི་སྙིང་རྗེ། compassion aroused by the sight of suffering beings; and 2) general compassion for all suffering beings: དམིགས་མེད་ལ་དམིགས་པའི་སྙིང་རྗེ། (CNG 17). Boundless compassion སྙིང་རྗེ་ཚད་མེད། (SGN 7) is an attribute of the Buddha and great boddhisattvas: སྙིང་རྗེའི་དབང་གིས་དེ་ཡི་སྡིག་པ་རྣམས། བདག་ལ་ལེན་པ་རྒྱལ་སྲས་ལག་ལེན་ཡིན། with the power of compassion, take [his] faults on yourself - this is the practice of the sons of the Buddha (GSL 14). In modern Bst. writing, compassion is exalted as the basis of world peace: སྙིང་རྗེ་ནི་འཛམ་གླིང་ཞི་བདེའི་ཀ་བ་ཡིན། compassion is the pillar of world peace (DLP 4) and its absence is the cause of སྙིང་རྗེ་བྲལ་བའི་གཏོར། inhuman destruction (DLP 7). བྱམས་བརྩེ་དང་སྙིང་རྗེ་བྱུང་བར་དགའ་ཚོར་མི་བྱེད་མཁན་སུ་ཡང་མེད། there is no one who does not appreciate love and compassion (DLP 15). The present Dalai Lama distinguishes love, kindness, compassion, and altruism as follows: ངོས་ཀྱིས་སྙིང་རྗེ་ཞེས་པའི་གོ་དོན་གསལ་ཙམ་ཞིག་བརྗོད་རྒྱུར། སྐྱེ་བོ་གང་ཞིག་གིས་ཤིན་ཏུ་དབུལ་ཞིང་ཕོངས་པའི་མི་ཞིག་ལ་ཡ་ང་བ་དང་། སྙིང་རྗེ་སྐྱེ་བའི་སྐབས་སུ། གང་གིས་དབུལ་ཕོངས་དེ་ལ་གདུང་སེམས་མཉམ་སྐྱེད་ཀྱི་རྣམ་འགྱུར་འདོན་གྱི་ཡོད་ཅིང་། དེ་ནི་སྙིང་རྗེ་སྐྱེ་ཡུལ་ཕོ་མོ་གང་རུང་བ་དེ་དབུལ་ཕོངས་ཡིན་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་བྱུང་བ་ཡིན། དེ་བས་ན་སྐྱེ་བོ་དེའི་སྙིང་རྗེ་དེ་ནི་གཞན་ཕན་སེམས་ཁུར་གྱི་གཞི་རྩར་བརྟེན་པ་ཞིག་ཡིན། ཕྱོགས་གཞན་ཞིག་གི་ཆ་ནས། རང་གི་ཆུང་མའམ། ཁྱོ་བོ། བུ་ཕྲུག ཡང་ན་ཉེ་བའི་མཛའ་གྲོགས་བཅས་ལ་བརྩེ་སེམས་སྐྱེ་བ་ནི་ཆགས་ཞེན་གྱི་གཞི་ལས་བྱུང་བ་ཡིན། གང་གི་ཆགས་ཞེན་དེ་ལ་འགྱུར་བ་འགྲོ་སྐབས་སུ་དེའི་བྱམས་སེམས་ལའང་འགྱུར་བ་འགྲོ་བ་མ་ཟད། བྱམས་སེམས་དེ་ཉམས་བརླག་ཏུ་འགྲོ་བའང་ཡོང་སྲིད། འདི་ནི་བརྩེ་སེམས་ངོ་མ་མ་ཡིན། བརྩེ་སེམས་ངོ་མ་ནི་ཆགས་ཞེན་གྱི་གཞི་ལས་བྱུང་བ་མ་ཡིན་པར། གཞན་ཕན་གྱི་སེམས་སྐྱེད་འབའ་ཞིག་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་བྱུང་བ་ཡིན། སྐབས་དོན་འདིའི་ཐད་ལ། འགྲོ་བ་སེམས་ཅན་མཐའ་དག་ཇི་ཙམ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་གྱིས་མནར་བཞིན་ཡོད་པ་དེ་ཙམ་དུ་རང་གིས་གཞན་ལ་ཕན་པ་སྒྲུབ་པའི་སེམས་འཁུར་བསྐྱེད་པ་ཡིན་ན། རང་ཉིད་ཀྱི་སྙིང་རྗེ་ཉམས་སྐྱོན་མེད་པར་རྒྱུན་གནས་ཐུབ་བ་ཡིན། Let me define what I mean by compassion (སྙིང་རྗེ།). When you have pity ཡ་ང་བ། or compassion སྙིང་རྗེ། for a very poor person, you are showing sympathy because he or she is poor; your compassion is based on altruistic གཞན་ཕན་སེམས། considerations. On the other hand, love བརྩེ་སེམས། towards your wife, your husband, your children, or a close friend is usually based on attachment ཆགས་ཞེན།. When your attachment changes, your kindness བྱམས་སེམས། also changes; it may disappear. This is not true love བརྩེ་སེམས་ངོ་མ།. Real love བརྩེ་སེམས་ངོ་མ། is not based on attachment ཆགས་ཞེན།, but on altruism གཞན་ཕན་གྱི་སེམས།. In this case your compassion will remain as a humane response to suffering as long as beings continue to suffer (DLP 13-14).
Proverbs: མི་ངན་རྩ་མེད་བཟོས་ཀྱང་རུང་། དེ་འདྲའི་མི་ལ་སྙིང་རྗེ་ལྟ་དགོས་མེད། evil criminals can be done away with; you cannot have compassion on such men (KPU 11).

Biblical: to feel compassion for someone: ཕས་ཁོ་མཐོང་སྟེ། སྙིང་རྗེ་སྐྱེས་ནས། [his] father saw him and was filled with compassion for him (Lk. 15:20), སྙིང་རྗེ་འཁྲུངས་ནས་དེ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ནད་པ་གསོ་བར་མཛད་དོ། [Jesus] had compassion on them and healed their sick (Mt. 14:14).

Biblical: love, affection, or compassion: ཤ་ཚ་དང་། སྤུན་ལ་བརྩེ་བ་དང་། affection and brotherly love (1 Pet. 3:8), ཡེ་ཤུས་ཐུགས་བརྩེས་ནས་དེ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་མིག་ལ་ཕྱག་རེག་པས། Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes (Mt. 20:34), ངས་ཐུགས་བརྩེ་དགོངས་པ་དེ་ལ་ཐུགས་བརྩེ་བྱ། སྙིང་རྗེ་དགོངས་པ་དེ་ལ་སྙིང་རྗེ་བྱའོ་གསུངས་སོ། I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion (Rom. 9:15).
Buddhist: Compassion inspired by the suffering of people or animals is exalted as one of the highest Bst. virtues: ནད་པར་རྗེས་སུ་བརྩེ་བ། compassion for the sick (KTM), མཁྱེན་བརྩེ་ནུས་གསུམ་གྱི་ཡོན་ཏན་བླ་ན་མེད་པ་དང་ལྡན་པ་འདི་ལ་སངས་རྒྱས་ཞུ་བ་རེད། one possessing unsurpassable qualities of wisdom, compassion, and power is called Buddha (TRC 75), གཅན་གཟན་སོགས་ཕར་འགྲོ་ཚུར་འོང་བྱེད་པ་གཟིགས་ཀྱང་གནོད་འཚེ་མི་མཛད་པ་དང་། བྱམས་པ་དང་། བརྩེ་བ་ཆེན་པོས་རང་འདོད་ལྟར་འགྲོར་བཅུག་པ། though [the Buddha] saw the deer and wild animals coming and going, he did not harm them, but in great love and compassion let them come and go as they pleased (SGN 3), སེམས་ཅན་ཚང་མར་བྱམས་བརྩེ་ཆེན་པོས་སྐྱོང་བར་མཛད་པ། [the Buddha] treated all animals with love and compassion (SGN 3). Buddhist: ཕན་སེམས། is the wish for good to come to others; གཞན་ཕན་གྱི་སེམས། altruism (DLP 14), རྫོགས་པའི་སངས་རྒྱས་གཞན་ཕན་སེམས་ལས་འཁྲུངས། complete Buddhahood is born of the wish to benefit others (GSL 12).
